When l was told we were visiting a a castle, grey blocks of stone came to mind( l clearly wasn’t thinking logically) I was amazed to see this massive, towering wooden structure before me! Yes Japanese castles are made from wood. They have moats and tiny narrow windows for firing weapons out of and other familiar features but l have to say they are quite different from the English versions. They have a hidden extra floor that you cannot see from outside, this is just one unfamiliar feature! We were put into groups of 5 or less and shown round by retirees who were practicing their English, what a wonderful idea! Our guide was very amusing!! A word of warning, there are lots of steps inside, some of them steep! But make the effort, it’s well worth it!!

Lake Kawaguchiko is one the the Mt Fuji 5 Lakes. It's very convenient to travel from Tokyo by train, highly suggested to get a Tokyo pass and reserve the seat. Also, it's highly recommended to rent a bike, the best way to travel around the Lake. There are many nice cafes and restaurant around the Lake area.

We loved this temple. We found it almost by accident. On the day we visited it was busy with hundreds of Buddhist students having graduation photos taken. But after they left it was quiet and peaceful. Its a working temple but everyone is incredibly friendly. We bumped into the head monk who took pity on our lack of Japanese and explained many things to us. There is a ropeway Aka cable car to the summit where you get spectacular 360 views including of course Mount Fuji if you are lucky. There is also a cafe up there with OK food but an amazing view. Highly recommended for a good couple of hours at least.

Yuki no Otani (Snow Wall) is the highlight of Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in spring. "Yuki no Otani" would be open from middle of April to late of June and you can walk along the walls during the festival. This snow wall is located in Murodo where is 2,450m above the sea level and it reaches about 20m some times. Of course, this is the best photo spot!! ※Please note this event would be cancelled if the weather is bad.
Spectacular during April - May. Very impressive. Was there during the corona season, so very few people. I was there before, much less enjoyable with lots of tourists around...

This is a fantastic place for viewing Kawazu-zakura type of cherry trees in Shimogamo hot springs area of Minami-Izu town, about 20 minutes by bus from Izukyu Shimoda Station at the very southern tip of Izu Peninsula. Visitors may buy the 2-days hop-on hop-off bus coupon available at the tourist information center at Izukyu Shimoda Station (it will save a couple of coins than paying for the normal bus fare). The cherry trees along the river embankment continue for about two kilometers on both sides. A day hot springs facility Gin no Yu Kaikan operated by the local town community is at the half-way point. I visited on February 27, 2019, and it was just slightly off-peak, but still in best view time.
