Great Mosque and Hospital of Divrigi

Reviewed By 1973LYS - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

We visited the Mosque - Hospital (Divriği Ulu Cami ve Darüşşifası) complex in Divriği in early March 2021. Currently is under restoration so it is not possible to go inside the mosque-hospital but the building is open for visit. For us it didn't really matter much, the most important things for us was to be able to enjoy the three peerless portals which pleased our eyes - only one in the world, nowhere else. Reading the article by Oya Pancaroğlu Ph.D "The Mosque-Hospital Complex in Divriği: A History of Relations and Transitions" prior to our visit to Divriği, really helped us to have more and detail understanding on the background and history of mosque-hospital itself. For us it is not just a building with beautiful portals but very rich in history. This building is famous for being symmetrical. There are 3D carvings on the doors which form shapes of a man reading Koran and praying (3 different shadows) on the male entrance and a woman again praying on the female entrance on the East. At the moment to reach Divriği, the most practical way is by car. The train which used to operate from Sivas, was stopped due to global pandemic. I would suggest that visitors really have some good time as it is in "the middle of nowhere" and it is relatively far from other historical sites. Hungry during the visit? There is one small street named Huma Hatun Sokak which you can visit and enjoy some local food. Try with local yoghurt and dolma - yummy.
