Gagwonsa Temple

Reviewed By 941AngieJ - Asan, South Korea

Gakwonsa Temple and the Independence Hall of Korea make a great day trip to Cheonan! Gakwonsa Temple was built in the 1970s in hopes for the reunification of North and South Korea. There's a 49-foot-tall Buddha statue there that's really impressive. You'll see Buddhists walking circles around it. There are a lot of stairs, especially to get up to the big Buddha. You can overlook the temple grounds from the highest level. It's gorgeous. There were budding cherry blossoms there today! You can park at the very bottom, along the road near the small gift shop and the huge set of stairs, but you don't have to. There is another parking lot if you keep driving up the road a little way.

Hyeonchungsa Shrine

Reviewed By chrisruggaluffagus - Yorktown, United States

Originally built in 1706 and rebuilt in 1932 the shrine honors Admiral Yi and several generations of his family. This is a great outdoor area that offers over 5km of trails along with beautiful views and a gorgeous pond. It truly is beautiful all year round; I visited in winter. The crisp air, small crowds, and quietness made this place even more special. If you are pressed on time, skip the museum and head straight to the shrine and walk around the pond on your way back to the parking lot. (Approximately 30 min). I recommend spending 1-1.5 hours to see everything. The museum shares history from 1700s about naval warfare and the infamous turtle ships. Videos begin at the top of each hour. The parking lot is huge, and gives you an idea about how crowded this place gets in the spring/summer.
