10 Sacred & Religious Sites in Alappuzha That You Shouldn't Miss

March 24, 2022 Terina Blouin

Often compared to Venice due to its abundance of canals, Alappuzha is the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala. Rent a houseboat for an up-close view of the palm-lined waterways. In August, the snake-boat race is a remarkable festival—each traditional boat has a crew of over 100 local sailors.

We visited Arthunkal Basilica on the way back from kumarakom vacation. It's an historic pilgrimage centre and one of the oldest churches in India. The main church and the one built in 1561 are both well maintained and open for public to pray. A must visit if you are in this area and definitely one to explore if you have an interest in Christian history in India

The temple is an old architectural splendor and is spread over a huge area with a large pond. The temple has two gates of entry the Eastern & Western Gate. The Western Gate has lot of shops & adequate parking. The temple is famous for the " Ambalapuzzha Palpayasam ( Rice Kheer/ Rice Pudding)", which is distributed at 12 noon. The Palpayasam needs to be pre-booked or if you are lucky you can stand in queue at 10:30 am and try and get it on the same day. The temple also has a elephant permanently inside the temple premises. It is believed that Sree Guruvayoor Appan ( Deity at Guruvayoor Temple) visits the temple every day noon for the "Ambalapuzzha Palpayasam". Please Note :- Due to the present COVID-19 situation, entry only through Western Gate is allowed. Children are though allowed inside the temple premises but entry into the main sanctum sanctorum.

Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple

Reviewed By Mikan999 - Bristol, United Kingdom

This remote temple is set in a beautiful forest. The building is in a typical Keralian style and shows the intricate woodwork so typical of these temples. As it is dedicated to to Snake King (God?) there is an extraordinary display of snake art - the Cobra being the snake. There are carvings and painted reliefs but most incredible are the thousands ( supposedly, 30,000) of stone images of Cobras. The grounds of the temple are beautiful and warrant a long stroll to the Kali temple. There were no more than half a dozen other visitors when we were there so the quietness was wonderful.

This is a great Goddess temple located in Alapuzzha . The presence of the mighty goddess Sree Bhuvaneeswari Devi makes the temple radiant and lustrous. They say ,thousands of devotees get relieved from their troubles and mess here. The temple has a majestic Rajagopuram or Vimanam which is not found anywhere in Kerala other than Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple in Trivandru. Here Devi lends her hand to all devotees irrespective of their cast gender and nationality. She is also well-known as bhaktadaasi which means the maid of devotees.
