Lovely traditional hotel with great old world charm. The onsens in the hotel are definitely a plus as you can retire to your room after a session without having to endure the external elements particularly when it is snowing. Very responsive staff. As others have mentioned, the building is mainly of light structure and as such you can hear sounds from rooms around / above you. How loud it gets is luck of the draw with the other guests staying at the hotel at the same time. For us it was generally ok and the hotel experience outweighed this negative

The staff here were courteous and nice, and the place itself was well kept and really good! Unfortunately the dinner we had was not as good as what we came to expect from other ryokans. It wasn't bad, just not as good as we expected. The onsens were great, and the experience of having a private open air onsen in the snow is an unforgettable experience.

At Daitokan you can enjoy not only the splendor of Yubatake right before your eyes but all the wonders of Kusatsu. Yubatake is without a doubt the most iconic site in the Kusatsu hot spring district. The dynamic scenery of the steam rising up from the spring is a sight to behold, not to mention the gorgeous, mystical illumination put on after dark. A stay at Daitokan will put the splendor of Yubatake right before your eyes. We have guest rooms overlooking Yubatake, so you can relax and soak in the pleasant scenery of Yubatake and the hot spring district. Our spring water’s source is the famous Yubatake itself. Please enjoy the best of hot spring baths with spring water straight from the source.
Overall I enjoyed m stay here. However, the heating system in each room doesn’t appear to have much consistency - on the same setting it would blow out super hot air and then quite cool air intermittently. The onsen, while beautiful, is closed 0000-0100 and again 0900-1500 which was super disappointing for those cold days you want to get up early to seize the day but relax later. Staff was friendly and accommodating to me despite my lack of good Japanese language skills. Location is great. Interior hallway floors could be updated. Supposedly had a restaurant on site but I couldn’t find it; saw several rooms that appeared to be abandoned or perhaps getting updated but with no apparent recent progress.

This is a 2.5-year-old new hotel. The owner Tas is very kind to give us a tour around his place before guiding us to our room. It has full amenities including a big fridge, toaster and microwave all easily available. The entertainment area is one of the most extensive that I have seen, it has a massage chair, Nintendo games, trampoline and chess sets etc. Knowing that we have difficulty making a dinner reservation with our super limited Japanese, Tas has kindly offered to try making a phone reservation for us, which is a very hard to come by gesture in Japan hospitality industry. We were very touched. That night, we went out in the hotel yukata for our lovely dinner date. Thanks again, Tas.

Nice, modern hotel that is right by (the surprisingly sulphur-ey!) yubatake, we enjoyed our stay. We had a small room but it was perfect for two the only thing it lacked was a bath/shower just a toliet and a big sink - you had the communal ladies (and seperate mens) onsens for washing facilities - we used them early evening and got lucky - we had them to ourselves. There is free parking, but there is a catch, its at the Kusatsu Now Resort Hotel which is on the outskirts of town - found it fine on sat nav and a free shuttle bus runs approximately every 30 minutes (and takes less than 10 mins to do the loop) but be aware of this if you need to plan an onward journey! Staff were lovely and everything was clean - breakfast in the morning was as other reviewers touched on very basic but if you are leapfrogging on somewhere else with a rental car as we were, it was perfect as you could grab and go.

I realize that there're just a few English reviews for this little hotel on TripAdvisor. It's understandable because the staff in this hotel can't speak English at all, thus most of the guests tend to be Japanese or Chinese. The two hosts we met (Miku and Miki) are such nice ladies. They try to talk to us even if they hardly speak English. After one day I feel like they actually my mom and sister. They also provide free traditional dinner and breakfast which I absolutely fall in love. The hotel is absolutely amazing. It's very clean and comfy. The room is huge with giant bed for a couple. I stayed here in late December (about -8°C/17.6°F) but their powerful heater saved our lives. I love the hotel design so much. It has an earth tone with a minimal style all over the building. If you can't imagine, think of when you walk into MUJI stores in Japan. The hotel only provides public bath (Onsen) so you have to share a bathroom with strangers, but it's always quiet and I never met other guests in public Onsen during my stay. The location is about 5 minutes walk from Yubatake (Town Center) and 8 minutes walk from the main bus station. You can call the hotel in advance and ask them to pick you up and send you off to the bus station (please don't walk with your luggages in the 3-inch thick snow like I did). Also noted that you can walk to Sainokawara Rotenburg Onsen in just 5 minutes and Otakinoyu Onsen in 10 minutes. Both public Onsens are a must! All in all, if I have a chance to visit Kusatsu again, I'll definitely go back to stay at this hotel.

I was shocked when I arrived the hotel and knew that our room didn't have a bathroom. I booked a room with an open air onsen. I got a room but a separate open air onsen in a different floor. I didn't know how this miscommunication happened. I paid almost seven thousand Japanese yens for a room without a bathroom also a private open air onsen! What's a shame.
