The natural pools of Porto de Galinhas are famous for years already. They appear between the corals (recifes) when the tied is low. And they offer a unique swimming experience in crystal clear seawater with no waves or current. Recently the beach south of Porto de Galinhas (Maracaipe) opened its recifes for the most beautiful beach and swimming experience you can find. The recifes are huge, to be reach by foot in low water and than a few minutes by the simple local sailing boats. Go there by Buggy from any point in Porto de Galinhas or walk about an hour on the beach. Skip Muro Alto and just go for the relaxed Maracaipe).

The owner of our pousada arranged it with a local fisherman (not one of the big companies) who took us out. The most amazing thing was seeing manatees in the wild (3! Including a mum and her cub! What are the chances!!) before and when we got back from the trip right there in front of the beach!! My kids loved the trip and snorkelled in the clear waters. We saw loads of fish and it is just beautiful. Well worth the trip! It was about 50 reais (£10) a person. Not bad!! If you have the chance, go. You never know, you may see a manatee too!!

Both the trail and the natural pools of Barra da Lagoa are absolutely beautiful, refreshing and arguably one of the most beautiful spots on the entire island. With this being said there are three things to watch out for: #1. Right before entering the trail you will cross a small river in Barra da Lagoa and I'd recommend to be careful in this area. I visited the trail with my wife in April of 2020 and we felt a bit unsafe after unintentionally witnessing a drug deal and having multiple men stare and partially follow us. May just have been paranoid but better safe than sorry. #2. When navigating through the rock formations that create the natural pools be careful. Many of the rocks are extremely slippery and there are multiple crevices that are several feet deep that would be impossible to get out of on your own. #3. The pools can be a great place for swimming but be mindful of the tide which can throw you against the rocks if you're not careful. The left side of the piscinas were much more calm than the right side from our experience. Q: How do you get to the Piscinas Naturais (natural pools) Barra da Lagoa? A: Your GPS will likely take you next to a blue metal bridge and may even tell you to cross via car which is impossible. What you will do is find nearby parking or have your Uber drop you off there, cross the bridge and take the first left. First you will pass by some residential and commercial buildings before entering the more secluded portion of the trail. You will next come to a fork in the trail where you can choose to go left or right. Head right for the natural pools (piscinas naturais). The trail should have clear markings with a few small side trails for scenic spots along the way.
