10 Rail Tours in New Zealand That You Shouldn't Miss

March 22, 2022 Deane Carmody

New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ ( listen); Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses—the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui), and the South Island (Te Waipounamu)—and around 600 smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long period of isolation, New Zealand developed a distinct biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.

I booked a trip scheduled 2nd April, the company notified me that due Covid 19 pandemic the tour would be cancelled. I was offered options of a refund or get credits. I chose refund as I was not gonna get any other time which they concurred. After 2 weeks I was contacted by one rude Eva Lawrence who stayed that the business was not doing well due to the pandemic hence they would not refund back the money?! So is that how you treat your customers? Was it my fault that you cancelled the trip due to the pandemic??! I need a refund ASAP. [email protected] +61450753569

A shout out to Hugo, our tour guide, who we discovered had stayed the night in Christchurch to make certain he picked us up promptly at 8:15 am. Our tour took us out across the Canterbury Plains with its sheep, cattle and deer farms then up into the hills that overlooked the Banks Peninsula. Our first destination was Manderley Farm in Little River. Here we had a sheep dog demonstration as well as a sheep shearing. Watching the sheep dogs run off into the hills to herd the sheep down to the shearing barn was amazing. Our host, Mary, then provided us with coffee, tea, fruit punch and homemade cookies. From there it was a drive around French Bay to the little town of Akaroa, Hugo's hometown. We had lunch at Bully Hayes and then time to shop for some of the famous wool products that are available in town. After lunch Hugo asked us if we wanted to work some of those calories off. We said of course so she took us to little known traihead that meanders up a hill looking back at French Bay and Akaroa. Along the way we spotted some metal sculptures of a crocodile, some giraffes and at the end, a rhinoceros made out of automobile parts. A fun little jaunt. It was a delightful day with a native New Zealander. We can't thank Hugo, and Canterbury Trails, enough.

Graham from Leisure Tours picked four of us up from our hotel for a half day wine tour, visiting four wineries with lunch included. He was friendly, very knowledgeable and pointed out places of interest as he drove us to the Waipara Valley. We were very comfortable in his people mover with plenty of room for us all. Lunch at Waipara Springs Winery was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful. The three other wineries had knowledgeable and friendly staff telling us all about their wines. We tasted several varieties and they were delicious. Graham had a good rapport with each winery and took us into each of the tasting rooms. We would certainly recommend this tour. We look forward to visiting Christchurch again and would contact Leisure Tours regarding the other tours they offer.
