Ningbo (Chinese: 宁波; Mandarin pronunciation: [nǐŋ pwó] ( listen)), formerly written Ningpo, is a sub-provincial city in northeast Zhejiang province in China. It comprises the urban districts of Ningbo proper, three satellite cities, and a number of rural counties including islands in Hangzhou Bay and the East China Sea. Its port, spread across several locations, is among the busiest in the world and the municipality possesses a separate state-planning status. As of the 2010 census, the entire administrated area had a population of 7.6 million, with 3.5 million in the six urban districts of Ningbo proper. To the north, Hangzhou Bay separates Ningbo from Shanghai; to the east lies Zhoushan in the East China Sea; on the west and south, Ningbo borders Shaoxing and Taizhou respectively.

We went in the middle of the week and it was pretty empty. Absolutely beautiful nature and a great break from city life.

A small hill nearby Putuo Temple in Ningbo, it was where the 20-meter statue of Guan Yin stands on. The rocks on the mountain are purple in color and many people plant purple bamboo on it, hence the name. On the hill there was a small monastery named Bu Ken Qu Guan Yin Yuan (Unwilling-to-go Guanyin Monastery). Its name comes from a ancient legend. A Japanese monk got a statue of Guanyin from Mt. Wutai, and wanted to take it to Japan. But he met a storm when he arrived at Zi Zhu Lin. He assumed that it was the hint that Guanyin wouldn’t like to go to Japan with him. So he built a monastery on the hill and named Unwilling-to-go Guanyin Monastery.

I have read a few other reviews about Nantang. No, it’s not old. So what? It’s beautiful. The architecture, plants, design, shops, food, facilities are great. The food aisle vendors provide diverse samples of local ingredients and the top rated dumpling store in Ningbo. We sampled so many great items: black bamboo ice cream, duria ice cream, stinky tofu, amazing soup crab dumplings, hemp crackers, etc. The shops offer some hand made Chinese goods, clothes, etc. A great way to get a sample of China in about 2 hours of leisurely strolling along a quant river.
