Once a destination for honeymoons and family vacations, Niagara Falls has really stepped it up as an action-packed vacation spot. The falls are literally the biggest draw – watching the frothy water tumble at alarming speeds can be mesmerizing. Throw on a poncho and hop aboard the Maid of the Mist to cruise close enough to the falls to be drenched by spray. Hit the main strip of Clifton Hill for flashy tourist attractions and restaurants galore.

We went in the cold of winter, and thanks to jet lag were there really early to watch the beautiful sunrise over the falls. It was a magical, quiet morning, with great views and we really enjoyed our time at the falls - the sheer power of the water is something else! Another place ticked off the list, excellent!

If you plan to visit Niagara Falls, and see what both sides (US and Canada) has to offer or really plan to do activities on both side, then crossing the Rainbow bridge is the way to go. My friend and I traveled, backpack in tow, and crossed the Rainbow bridge on foot. Immigration on both sides await on each end prior to entry or reentry. It was a easy 22-25mins walk, maybe longer is your pace is slow and/or you take moments to view the falls from the bridge and strike a pose for photos. After getting in the Canadian side, literally I saw rainbow formed by the bridge.

This is a up close look at the falls through the tunnels dug into the rocky Canadian side of the falls. You can view the falls from a open deck and then from two vantage points through openings on the rocky side behind the falls. The thundering sound of the gallons and gallons of water falling is a very unique and humbling experience.

After taking a stroll through Dufferin Island park we crossed the road and walked away from the top of Niagara Falls to see the power house and the Niagara falls dam that controls the flow to the falls and diverts the water to generate electricity. On our way back to return to the falls we discovered a boat stranded in the middle of the river. A nearby plaque explains that it was a scow boat that has been there since 1918, when it became loose from the tug boat that was towing I while dredging the river of rocks and debris. The men on board realised that they were in peril of going over the falls, so opened the false bottom of the scow and dumped the rock that they had collected and stranded them selves on a small landing, where it still remains today. One man swam to safety but the other man had to be rescued via a rope line shot from a nearby building. The men onboard
