If you go to this "temple" complex for a spiritual experience, you're likely to be disappointed. However, this was actually part of a Buddhist theme park, and as a slice of the history about the Japanese "economic bubble," it's quite incredible. You can go into all of the buildings at your leisure. It is quite rundown, which is too bad because there are some remarkable sights. I thought the most compelling was the huge pavilion with more than 1,100 Kannon statues that appear to be nearly exact replicas of those in the revered Sanjusangendo Temple in Kyoto. In Kaga, you can actually walk into this building with your shoes on, take photographs, and marvel at the exquisite statues. I was on a Kannon pilgrimage when I saw the huge Kannon at Kagaonsen out the train window. When first arriving at this "temple," I was very dismayed by the rundown, dilapidated condition of the place. However, when I learned that it had actually been a theme park and not a religious site, I was thrilled to get a closeup look at it. I thought it was very exciting and definitely plan to return to it.
