This huge stone granary was the site of the first major Mexican victory against the Spanish in the War of Independence.
This massive building is a history museum, an art museum, an anthropologiacl museum, and, best of all, the very place where one of the most important events in Mexican history actually occurred. Don't be fooled by the drab exterior. Inside you will find the story of European colonization and its many horrors, the struggle for independence from its oppressive yolk, and the courage and determination of the Mexican people portrayed in the most vivid detail. This is a "must see" while in Guanajuato.

This popular plaza is the center of social activity in the city.
This is a beautiful public square just to sit and watch people and listen to the Mariachi bands. Really enjoyable.

right in the middle of town just next to the basilica of guanajuato is the plaza de la paz or place of peace. it has a small, grass and flower covered park with benches on a small hill overlooking the streets and outdoor cafes and shops of sopena street. it's a great place to plan to meet people because it is central and, if they're late, you won't mind waiting there because it's so lovely. the basilica is right there, so you must visit it with it's ornate baroque interior.

This picturesque alley is so named because it is narrow enough for two lovers to kiss from opposite sides of the street.
When in Guanajuato and going with your significant other, the alley is a must visit and the photo too. Legend has it if you cross and don't kiss, bad luck ensures. Approach the narrowest part of the alley and you'll find the entrance to two gift shops from which you can directly access the balconies for the iconic photo for only $30MXN

The mountainous setting of Guanajuato precludes any straight lines and it's more like an ancient Andalucian city than 17th century New World. Baratillo typically has an irregular shape at the cusp of a winding, narrow street. It's one of the most intimate and beautiful plazas in the city. At certain times of the day there's a busy taqueria; also a flower stall, a grocery and a cheap Chinese takeaway! Much to enjoy.

Inexpensive ride to the.base of the massive El Pipila monument and some of the best views and photo opportunities in town. Expansive views of the historical center, surrounding neighborhoods, and nearby mountains. A ride on the funicular is a great way to kick off a visit to Guanajuato.
