This municipal tower was a symbol of the city's autonomy, begun in 1313 and completed in 1380.
The belfry was a Medieval masterpiece. It was interesting to climb the spiral staircase up to the top lookout where the bells rang. We stayed to watch the clock work ring the various bells every 15 minutes. Definitely recommend staying st the top until you see the show.

Amazingly beautiful small city, great Christmas Market, very scenic, great food and bars and a very short train ride from Brussels. Take a taxi into town if you are than 2 people. It’s a rather long walk specially if cold and rainy. It’s only 8E versus 3E for the tram pp. If you have an extra day and have to make a choice between Ghent and Brugge I recommend you choose Ghent.

Historic main square of the city, with outstanding architecture all around. Quite spacious and a must-see.

Vooruit is a vibrant live performing arts center located in a 100 years old monument in the heart of Ghent. Since 1982, we have been offering countless cultural events like concerts, podium performances, parties, book presentations, debates... Vooruit is a significant meeting place for a very diverse public. Contributing to this is our popular Cafe with patio, where anyone can come enjoy a (vegetarian) meal or drink, meet for a chat, or catch up on some work.
This is a great place to drop in for a late afternoon beer. It's a "take us as you find us" sort of bar. A place where students meet their friends; they can equally find a corner to catch up on course work. Also a friendly atmospheric place for a family to gather for a drink. The seating is mainly in long rows, so you might find yourself sitting next to complete strangers, perfect for a chance encounter. The room itself is glorious, full of artistic touches and the beer isn't bad either!
