Rome wasn't built in a day--and you'll need much more than a day to take in this timeless city. The city is a real-life collage of piazzas, open-air markets, and astonishing historic sites. Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, contemplate the Colosseum and the Pantheon, and sample a perfect espresso or gelato before spending an afternoon shopping at the Campo de’Fiori or Via Veneto. Enjoy some of the most memorable meals of your life here, too, from fresh pasta to succulent fried artichokes or a tender oxtail stew.

Under this church is most likely the place where St. Paul was under house arrest for two years and where he wrote several books of the New Testament. Fortunately the crypt has not been overly commercialized. The visiting hours are limited, so be sure to check when it’s open (usually late afternoon) and the cost is about 3 Euros.

The smallish square is dominated (in every sense of the word) by the soaring columns of the Temple of Hadrian. The 11 columns have been incorporated into a more modern structure (more so than the 145 AD year old columns). Ringing the plaza are some interesting buildings and relaxing cafes. Once upon a time, there was a college for Bergamo students and there is also a Palazzo Ferrini building here in the square. I wouldn't classify this as a very pretty or pedestrian friendly plaza; it's claim to fame is really the Temple columns. Some of the side streets have more activity and give glimpses into the lives of the residents. The scene of the nun, bending over to converse with an elderly (and alone) man in a wheelchair, really found its way to our hearts. Random acts of kindness are too far and few between.

In the heart of the city, this square is the center of business, palazzo Chigi and Ferraioli as well as the palace Wedekind; in the center a nice fountain of Giaccomo della Porta and overall the magnifiicient column of Marcus Aurelius, sculpted with scenes of the doing actions of the emperor.

A beautiful Red Granite Obelisk from Heliopolis in the heart of Rome. Another attraction we didn’t set out to see but something I was glad to have seen. It looks entirely lout of place in the centre of the Roman buildings, this distinctly Egyptian Obelisk and it’s a perfect example of the influence and power Rome exerted on the Ancient World in that they could bring something like this from another Ancient Super Power. Well worth a visit and spending some time casting your imagination into the doldrums of history as to what the city looked like when this arrived and what the people would have thought seeing it for the first time.

Right in centro storico is located piazza di Montecitorio, on the northern side where is the Italian parliament home since 1871; in the middle of the piazza is an Egyptian obelisk; beyond is piazza Colonna and palazzo Chigi, the official residence of the prime minister; Montecitorio place takes his name from the Palzzo di Montecitorio
