The Djemila (translation: beautiful) Roman ruins of the ancient city Cuicul are easily accessible by road from Constantine or Setif. Except for a few buildings, only the street paving and the foundations are preserved. That's why a guide is needed (they're not working on Tuesdays) or a guidebook (a good one is for sale at the shop but is available in French only). The theater, a temple, a Christian monument are well preserved. I preferred Timgad for its typical Roman checkerboard plan but Djemila offers another type of city and some better preserved buildings.

The Palais of Raïs is an historic and architectural site. It is also a center of art and culture. Open to the public in November 1994, it consists of three palaces, five small houses, a Sabbath (covered walkway), a central courtyard, a walkway and a battery. By its location in the perimeter of the classified old city, it remains the last witness of the extension of the Casbah of Algiers to the sea.

An amazing palace.. with an interesting history, we took beautiful photos .. guides are helpful,we got a discount because we were more than 10 and had students among us. There were many models with traditional fancy tlemcenian clothings .. the place takes you away in the past.. I visit it every time I go to tlemcen ... It really is a must.

You will get stunning photos of Constantine City and the surrounding areas from this place. Another very interesting facet that I wouldn't have noticed had I not been visiting with a local was that many of the names of the martyrs are Jewish (!). Apparently after WWII and Israel's opening, many of the large Jewish population of Constantine left the country (don't actually know if it was by their choice or not). But anyway was totally interesting. Try to time it for sunset for best photos.
