A group of islands and islets some 25 miles off the Tanzanian coast, the Zanzibar Archipelago is headlined by Unguja (often referred to simply as Zanzibar) and Pemba. Once a separate nation, Zanzibar has a long history of trade with the Arab world, dating back to at least the 11th century. The capital, Stone Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many interesting historic attractions. Zanzibar's bright white beaches and nearby coral reefs make it very popular with the sun and sea set.

We had a great experience with Abu, our guide, walking the streets of Stone Town! Abu is super kind and very knowledgeable on all things history. He is an English teacher so you can rest assured that you will get great info in a beautifully spoken discourse. We asked him to stay with us also after sunset because we didn't know what to expect regarding the safety on the streets. You can probably do the tour by yourself, but you will miss all the history details (which are more than interesting) and also you might get a little bit harassed by people on the street or at the market trying to sell you things. With Abu we felt safer and in good hands. You must also note that this is a small town and everybody knows everybody. The guide is inclined in taking you to shops or at food street sellers that he is friends with. Thit can't be frown upon, as we would probably do the same thing. But if you are fixated on going somewhere, in particular, no worries (hakuna matata!) the guide will accompany you there.

From the moment we left the hotel in Stone Town until our return, Mohammed perfectly arranged our full day trip to Kwale island. He arranged everything needed, from transport, excellent food, fruit on the boat, swimming, snorkeling, even walking through mangroves, what was my biggest wish. He speaks a very good english. We had fun and spent a great time with him and others on the boat. We met him as a guide and we leave as a long known friends???? We are greatful for everything he has done for us.

The Safari blue trip was a beautiful experience including snorkeling nearby a beautiful sandbank. A delicious seafood grilled lunch on Menai island and some more swimming around the sandbank. Our disappointment was that due to the very expensive dollar rates of these trips we had a difficult decision between which to choose. We chose Safari blue as it was sold to us with plenty of snorkeling and swimming in the lagoon. We only had one snorkeling opportunity. And stayed at the same place the whole day. We never saw the lagoon as the tour guide made and excuse of high tide - when it was in fact low tide and the tide was not due to come in till later in the evening or at for another 4 hours. Beautiful trip. As everything in Zanzibar is. But poor value for money due to the inaccurate description.

Zanzibar is a great place for shopping and bargain hunting. You will inevitably come across the odd ashtray carved out of a coconut shell but there are enough locally made art and craft to fill a whole suitcase with tasteful souvenirs! On this half-day tour, your guide will accompany you to local shops around town starting at the kanga bazaar where you can read proverbs printed on kanga cloth and also learn to wrap a kanga the traditional way. This will be followed by a visit to the leather sandal making workshop that has been supplying sandals to the island since 1976 after which you will move on to SASIK, one of the most successful women’s cooperatives in Zanzibar, to watch the women workers hand stitch and embroider elaborate cushion covers and wall hangings.

All I can say is WOW! The Zanzibar Traditional Cooking Class was WAY more than just cooking! It was a full on indulgence into the local lifestyle and the authentic culture of these beautiful people. Lutfia is an absolute darling who exudes warmth from the moment you meet her and just goes the extra mile. The other folk that you come into contact with each also have their own unique characters and are a real treat. The whole experience is just one surprise after the other and kept me mesmerized the entire afternoon. I highly recommend this activity - don't leave zanzibar without doing it. One of my highlights of my trip! (They also sell some of their spices, so do take some extra cash)
