Teatro Argento is a traditional Sicilian Puppet Theatre founded in 1893 and still run by the same Family. Its a great little attraction and a worthwhile place to visit .
Having read reviews before our holiday, we wanted to go along to a puppet show here during our stay in Palermo as they are such an important part of Sicilian culture. Situated in a street just across from the cathedral, it is a small but welcoming theatre. We turned up about 30 minutes before the start time to ensure we were able to get in - there was plenty of room but I imagine it could get full quickly in the summer months. There are lots of photos of the shows and the family going back through the generations in the theatre so it’s interesting to wander around and look at them before the show. There is a talk before the show about the family, the history and the puppets - it’s all in Italian but you can get an idea of what is being said. The puppets are incredible and it’s fascinating to see the puppeteers bring them to life in the show. This is about 30 minutes long and is often based on the tales of Orlando - it’s quite exaggerated and almost like a puppet pantomime. Having no knowledge of Italian won’t affect your enjoyment of the show as you can follow what is happening easily enough. After the show, the owner brings out one of the puppets and encourages people to come and hold it - it’s so heavy so goodness knows how they actually perform with them. You are welcome to take photos too. There are some small puppets that you can purchase if you want at the back of the theatre. It was a great experience and I would highly recommend going along to a show. We definitely visit again if we return to Palermo.
