Once known for smog, traffic and tacky architecture, Athens is a city reformed thanks to fortunes brought by the 2004 Summer Olympics. Spotless parks and streets, an ultra-modern subway, new freeways, an accessible airport and all signs in perfect English make the city easily negotiable. Meriting more than a stopover en route to the islands, sophisticated Athens sites include many pillars of Western history, from the Acropolis to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, as well as treasures in the National Archaeological Museum.

We viewed the changing of the guard at noon, it was spectacular! Our tour guide had already informed us of history & the significance of the guards uniform. It was a sight to see. The synchronized movements, the purposeful meaning behind it all was recognized. Especially since the guards are doing this for free.

Dating back to the 1830's, The Foundry once served as Athens' original iron foundry. The music venue has recently been reimagined to honor the site's roots and preserve this piece of Athens' fine past. The multi-tiered structure and soaring beams welcome crystal clear views, stellar acoustics and a place to celebrate the detail and dedication to craft. National and local artists play daily.
