Die Tradition der Thurnauer Töpferei lässt sich archivalisch gesichert bis in das Jahr 1579 zurückverfolgen. Sie spielt bis heute eine große Rolle für das wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Leben des Marktes Thurnau, der deshalb ein Spezialmuseum in einem der ältesten Häuser, der ehemaligen Lateinschule aus der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts, eingerichtet hat. Eine Besonderheit stellt die bei Umbauarbeiten wiederentdeckte "Schwarze Küche" dar. Die Arbeitsweise der ortsansässigen Töpfer kann von der Tongewinnung über das Drehen, Dekorieren bis hin zum Brennen in neu überarbeiteten Räumen verfolgt werden. Die Sammlung umfasst neben dem typischen Thurnauer Gebrauchsgeschirr auch kunsthandwerkliche Arbeiten und zeigt Entwicklungen und Tendenzen, sowohl in der Produktionsvielfalt als auch im Vergleich der einzelnen Werkstätten auf. Regelmäßige Sonderausstellungen ergänzen die Dauerausstellung.
