Newark-on-Trent or Newark /ˈnjuːək/ is a market town and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of the county of Nottinghamshire, in the East Midlands of England. It stands on the River Trent, the A1 (on the route of the ancient Great North Road), and the East Coast Main Line railway. The origins of the town are possibly Roman, as it lies on an important Roman road, the Fosse Way. The town grew around Newark Castle, now ruined, and a large market place, now lined with historic buildings. It was a centre for the wool and cloth trades. In the English Civil War, it was besieged by Parliamentary forces and had to be relieved by Prince Rupert in a battle known as the Relief of Newark.

Plenty to do here for all ages... Came with the rug rats, walked down to the fjord and watched the cars go thru.. Great how it's such a simple thing, yet kids and adults alike are cheering when a car goes thru fast.... And thumbs down when they don't... Just good fun for all... The cafe / visitor ares here are also extremely good. Shops to view all manner of trinkets/ art etc and of course great ice creams too. Viewing the lake and many birds on it to pass the time away and walk around the lake, which is laid out well for all manner of physical ability's to enjoy..... Take photos and wander around the abbey itself and view the rest of the facilities..... A really good enjoyable day for all. Take a picnic or dine in the really nice restaurants..... Good fun for all.....

Just arrived at Smeaton Lakes at 1015pm after fitting me in at very late notice. What a lovely reception and even though the warden was in her dressing gown, she was so lovely and empathetic and even asked if I was ok for food. It might be a little expensive but to be honest, you can’t put a price on someone bending over backwards to accommodate a van so late and even more so, to make you feel like it was no big deal and to be totally welcome.
