Berlin is an edgy city, from its fashion to its architecture to its charged political history. The Berlin Wall is a sobering reminder of the hyper-charged postwar atmosphere, and yet the graffiti art that now covers its remnants has become symbolic of social progress. Check out the Weltzeituhr (world time) Clock, topped by a model of the solar system, then turn back time by dining at the historic Zur Letzten Instanz, a 16th century restaurant that was frequented by Napoleon and Beethoven.

In former East Berlin, a short train journey from Alexanderplatz, lies Tierpark Berlin – Europe’s largest animal park! Set in 160 hectares of beautiful parkland around the historic manor house Schloss Friedrichsfelde, the Tierpark is home to animals from all over the world. And in 2020, it celebrated the opening of its remarkable new Rainforest House, with tigers, crocodiles and more. Please check the currently applicable Corona precautions on the Tierpark‘s website before your visit.
People probably think only of Berlin Zoo when they visit Berlin, not the Tierpark, which is just outside the city centre on the U5 underground line. It is well worth a visit because the enclosures are set in an attractive wooded area, and the Tierpark houses some unusual animals which are rarely seen in European zoos. What I liked most about the Tierpark was that the animals had spacious enclosures, and it is clear from the work being done there that certain animals, eg the sun bears, will soon be rehoused in larger enclosures with more species-appropriate environments. There is a good restaurant in the centre of the Tierpark and a cafe, too.
