10 Outdoor Activities in City Center That You Shouldn't Miss

May 19, 2021 Alida England

The shrines and temples of Kyoto offer a rare link between modern life in the city and its very ancient past. The Shimogamo Shrine dates to the 6th century and seems suspended in time, its serenity and spiritual power still palpable. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, then see the life-sized Thousand Armed Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō. Enjoy traditional geisha performances, then savor a tranquil meal at a restaurant overlooking the Kamo River.

I cannot recommend this enough. We absolutely loved our bike trip from start to finish. It was such a great way to see so many sights in just one afternoon (especially as we had our 4-year-old with us) - we wouldn’t have been able to see nearly as much on foot, public transport or car. Naoki was very accommodating and knowledgeable. We loved weaving through the amazing little streets we otherwise would never have discovered, in addition to covering the major attractions. And the pre-ride coffee and post-ride beers were wonderful too. We will definitely book another tour with Naoki when we next come to Kyoto.
