Probably best known for its eponymous beer, Sapporo—the capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island—has maintained the youthful and open atmosphere of the 1972 Olympic Winter Games, drawing international visitors for its annual Snow Festival and its world-famous ramen. Those seeking out the full diversity of Japanese cuisine will want to visit: a city with a ramen-inspired theme park is one that embraces and pampers foodies.

We took the one day hot spring package (¥1800) which included round-trip bus tickets from Sapporo Station as well as the entrance ticket to the onsen. The tickets can be purchased at Sapporo Station platform 12. With these tickets, you can take the local bus Rapid No.7 (or the Kappa Liner which requires reservation, if no reservation than you can still aboard this liner if there are extra seats available) which will take roughly 1hr30mins. Upon arrival at the onsen, you will have to remove your shoes at the entrance. There are large lockers for luggages and smaller ones for your shoes, you’ll need a ¥100 coin for each locker which is refundable. There are more lockers in the changing rooms if you want to store your belongings. We brought our own towels, but they have big towels for rental and smaller ones for purchase. They also provide basic toiletries and a hair dryer. As for the onsen itself, they have it indoors and outdoors, and it’s absolutely gorgeous outside. There’s common spaces in the building if you just want to rest and relax. After spending time at the onsen, we had a lovely and satisfying lunch at their restaurant. We had their Indian food but they also have soba, which you have to order and pay before sitting down. Overall the experience was amazing, and I would definitely recommend this place.

A prominent hot spring resort in Hokkaido known as Sapporo’s relaxation getaway. Jozankei is one of Hokkaido’s most well established hot spring resorts. Located in Sapporo City, it is an area designated within the gorgeous Shikotsu-Toya National Park, where one can experience the unique beauty of each season surrounded by rich nature. From large-scale hotels with 650 rooms to cozy, traditional Japanese-style inns with 9 rooms, Jozankei boasts an impressive collection of 19 accommodations, as well as a variety of high quality hot springs and easy access from New Chitose Airport and Sapporo Station. Aside from hot springs, Jozankei is popular as a spot for various outdoor leisure activities. The nearby Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort, as well as canoeing, rafting, horseback riding, bicycle rentals, and an orchard for many kinds of fruit picking are all available for visitors to enjoy.
This place is less than an hour’s bus ride from Sapporo City Centre. Might I add, it’s best to book your roundtrip ticket online so as not to waste anytime queueing. Bus departing from the stations near Tokyu Hands leave on the dot, though getting a bus on the way back to Sapporo may be a little tricky. This town is very walkable, quite peaceful and has a wonderful scenery of the autumn foliage during and after your ride. There is a spronkle of foot baths along the way, don’t forget to bring your small towel to dry uour feet with. All in all, I highly rcommend Jozankei Onsen Town- no wonder it is quite the favourite among locals.
