You know how it is, you randomly choose a place and you hit the jackpot! My partner and I walked into El Cortijo, tried several of their exquisite mezcals - madrequixe, Mexico, pichumetl and fell in love. We got talking to Gustavo and asked him about mezcal tours. He offered us several options and so it was that the next day he picked us up at the hotel and treated us to an unforgettable day of mezcal knowledge and tasting. From the different plants, to the palenque and the tasting with expert insights into the complexities of this delightful drink. Gustavo is a fountain of knowledge and is a mezcalero through and through. And a genuinely nice guy. I can not recommend El Cortijo enough. Try them all. You won’t be disappointed!

Before traveling to San Cristobal I had researched Mezcal bars and Puro Mexicano Mezcaleria caught my attention as the Mezcal bar to visit. My friends and I (all fans of this wonderful spirit) couldn’t wait for the bar to open on our first night. The bar did not disappoint. As we entered, we were excited to see so many offerings of this fine spirit. Luis, the owner is very passionate and knowledgeable about all things Mezcal and will guide you through some wonderful tastings. If you’re traveling to San Cristobal de las Casas and enjoy Mezcal, please go to Puro Mexicano Mezcaleria and have some pours with Luis. You will be glad you did. It’s only about two blocks south from Calle Guadalupe (the main pedestrian street) on Benito Juárez and the doors are usually open by 6:30pm (closed on Monday).

Ron's Place in Zipolite (Oaxaca, Mexico) is a unpretentious watering hole where friends and future friends gather to talk, drink, and revel in the fact that, despite it all, life truly is good. Especially when you have a drink in front of you and good tunes playing in the background.

Maroon yourself in Oaxaca's first and only tiki bar. Behind the adobe walls of this 18th century hacienda hides an otherworldly oasis. The drinks are heady concoctions; flaming bowls of light and dark rums, fresh fruits and juices, and secret tinctures that will quench the thirst of any soul who steps through these doors and into a Polynesian paradise that time forgot.
