Cumbria's valleys and fells (as the low mountains are known) are home to idyllic villages, high moorlands and picturesque lakes. Literary buffs will enjoy Wordsworth's Dove Cottage (go in March to see daffodils), and if you've got kids in tow, visit The World of Beatrix Potter. Or just enjoy a leisurely drive through beautiful scenery.

As a Tex-Mexan myself, this food is absolutely delicious. The venue is gorgeous and has thoughtful, tasteful decoration. The staff are amazing, such terrific service. We were a large party and everything was fabulous. Portion sizes are large (come hungry). Really enjoyed eating here.

5 of us went here for a couple of drinks and stayed for a lot more! We were greeted when we entered and the barman/landlord found us a table to sit 5 which was safely distanced from others. It is a quirky Jennings pub with very friendly staff serving a range of real ales aswell as Guinness and lagersall at a reasonable price too - perfect for a group of mixed drinkers. Unfortunately we eventually had to leave as we'd booked into a restaurant elsewhere in town.

We stayed in Cockermouth for a couple of nights and spent a fair bit of time in here on both nights. The pub is very much to our taste, have very friendly staff and a good selection of local real ales (refreshingly there were some strong ones, which a lot of pubs seem reluctant to sell) plus Warsteiner on draught. Prices are very reasonable. Well worth a visit. Plenty of 'local characters' in there - always a bonus.

This night sees amateurs and some of the best semi-professional comedians competing to be chosen as the best act of the evening by the audience. The best act wins £50 and a middle spot on a future pro night. This night is hosted by one of the best comperes on the comedy circuit. Tickets are £4 each. On the third Thursday of each month we have our pro night. This night consists of four or five brilliant and hilarious comedians. There is also an awesome headliner finishing off each gig. Tickets are £8 each.

'The Taggy Man is an independently owned pub selling great cask ales, premium lagers, wines and and a top selection of gins and spirits. Hot bar food served every day. Dogs are very welcome with well behaved owners .'
Great old fashioned but new pub. Friendly staff and a good selection of ales. Got here on Monday quiz night and only got a table as one team cancelled Quiz wasn't too hard although the quiz masters jokes were atrocious. Really enjoyed the night.

What a great pub The New Union has become under the new landlord. Four cask ales that change every few days, craft keg beers too, and more ciders than you can shake a stick at. There's always something going on at The New Union. Before the lockdown it was Quiz Night, Music Night, Vegan Food Night, Craft Afternoon, Whisky Tasting, Thai Food Night, the list goes on... During lockdown it was Online Whisky Tastings, Online Music Sessions, Cask Beer Take Away (contactless through the window!!), Full Online Shop, the list goes on again... After lockdown, it's pop-up Fish 'n' Chip Fridays, pop-up Burger Night Saturdays, socially distanced picnic benches in the car park, new benches on the covered decking, and now a full "Traditional Pub Grub" food offering Monday to Thursday with a new chef, extra staff and carefully chosen social distancing adaptations inside. The list still goes on... Phil never stops innovating, and puts customer service at the top of every new idea. I could not be more pleased that The New Union is my local ????

The Golden Rule, tucked away off the main road in Ambleside, is a traditional and unchanging multi-roomed pub in the heart of The Lake District with a reputation that spreads around the world. Ever popular with varied mix of local residents, visitors from near and far, the young and old, walkers, climbers, mountain bikers, artists and writers, the Rule is just the place to have a drink and a chat.
My Husband and I have been visting the Golden Rule for 10 years with our two Westies. We always get a warm welcome from the Landlord and Landlady with a treat for the dogs waiting. It's lovely to see Rosie their little dog and chat to the locals whilst enjoying the ales and a pork pie. Looking forward to seeing you again in a couple of weeks.
