Forvie National Nature Reserve

Reviewed By 581leew

Forvie is an amazing nature reserve with a huge variety of wildlife and habitats. One of the main attractions is the Seal haul-out which can be found at the end of the reserve. The beach the seals are on is designated by Marine Scotland making it an offence to intentionally or recklessly harass them. That is why the reserve requests they are view from the other side of the river on Newburgh beach where the won't be disturbed. Repeated disturbance by visitors on Forvie has a serious impact of Seals ability to rest, moult and breed on the reserve. This is why they are legally protected from being prevented from doing it. Ythan Seal Watch is an online group based on Newburgh beach which monitors the Seals and visitors who disturb them. The point of the signs and mapped routes on the reserve is to protect the wildlife and habitats there. It is extremely disappointing that a small number of visitors to Forvie continue to ignore this legal advice and view the Seals from the beach they are on causing serious disturbances to the colony. That is what we now tackle disturbances in a very public way. Please always respect wildlife and follow all signs, maps and advice on the reserve. It is also extremely frustrating for other visitors enjoying the Seals from the other side of the estuary on Newburgh. There is no information on the Forvie reserve to advise visitors to view the Seals from there. Visitors have right of responsible access. Part of that is following all the information and advice in the car-park when visitors arrive at the waterside car-park.

Glen Tanar National Nature Reserve

Enjoyed a pleasant walk here on a sunny autumn day. Unfortunately the visitor centre was closed but managed to navigate our way around on foot. Climbed to the Knockie viewpoint and walked around the estate. Just the place to blow the cobwebs away and get away from it all

Pitfour Estate

Stumbled across this walk after a recommendation from a friend (why is it not advertised more ?) Beautiful walk around the lake, and a nice seat on the grass bank in the afternoon sunshine So many swans and ducks on the lake, and a rowing boat with a fly fisher, very picturesque Can highly recommend it to anyone looking to spend an hour or two in the open air. Walk is very easy, on hardcore gravel path so suitable and easily accessible for most users

White Wood

The White Wood is a living monument to peace, which will develop over three hundred years. As a site of reflection, it was created by the community of Huntly and artist Caroline Wendling, hosted by local arts organisation Deveron Projects, with stones from France, Scottish soil and oak trees grown from acorns from Joseph Beuys' 7000 Oaks in Kassel. The wood's native trees, shrubs and flowers all display an element of white, the colour of peace.

An incredibly peaceful spot set in a beautiful forest. Planted as a living artwork, this wood has collected many stories over time, and to think it will continue to do so is magical. I would recommend exploring this map to anyone visiting the area.

Donmouth Local Nature Reserve

Reviewed By Shona3003 - Westhill, United Kingdom

Lovely unspoilt beach that is much quieter than the main Aberdeen beach. Great for any length of walk, the sand at the start can be quite hard going, but you can move onto damper sand once round at the north sea. If lucky you can see seals in the river and sea. Walk to one of the war time pill boxes, some are in good condition. Enjoy a walk on an unspoilt beach. Plenty of beach to walk on even at full tide. Lovely for walking the dog.
