Iriomote Island

Reviewed By CaptainJWCourtney - Severn, United States

If you are adventurous and want to really explore a beautiful place that is remote and yet a place with so many tings to do, then you really must visit Iriomote. I was there on an cultural anthropology visit with about 12 other people that was being lead by Dr. Barbara Golden. When our boat landed, the first thing I thought of was the island in the original King Kong movie, it was so remote, pristine and it was a real South Pacific / South China Sea island. We were met by a bus with several Catholic nuns in it and were taken to the other side of the island where they has several places for us to stay (boys place and the other was the girls place). We watche them make paper out of a native plant that when soaked in water for a few days in the hot sun kind of boiled the plant. Then 3 days in the sun and it was a very fiberous plant with long fibers that could be woven and beat into a very expensive paper. We also went to the beach to look for the smallest seashells in the world, we found about 10 pounds of them! Then we had several field briefings on the native plants, some were considered as extinct over 2.5 million years ago, they are a cross between a fern and a Ginko Biloba tree. they also have a cat on the island called the "Yama necko" or mountain cat. Every night we were free to walk around and visit before we had our traditional Iriomote evening meal. Iriomote is by far the one of the most beautiful and interesting Ryukyuan islands. The island north of Iriomote each have unique adventures that will await you, from an ox cart ride to seeing a "Turtle Back" Ocean floor. If you want to explore and have a very memorable time, visit this part of Japan, and please go to Iriomote as your dessert!

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium

Impressive aquarium and glad we put that in our itinerary . We went early to avoid the crowd , tourist buses started to come by around 10 am We also encountered a group of students on excursion so the place got crowded quickly . If you are not in a hurry (we are not) , just slowly stroll through the crowd and appreciate the different species of sea life on display. Fav window is of course the Whale Sharks & Giant Mantra Rays .. mesmerizing to see the giants swimming around We greatly enjoyed the place , time well spent P/S : If you intend to visit the Tropical Dream Center , keep the aquarium ticket . You get half price for the Tropical Dream Center entrance ticket

I feel that I am in a wonder land. I went there twice during my stay in Ishigaki Island. There are many bus routes coming to Kabira bay from Bus Terminal and the schedule is pretty frequent. There are shops, restaurants, view point, rest room and many more. Very convenient and safe place for solo traveler :)

Valley of Gangala

Reviewed By Niameow - Canada, null

You have to book a tour to visit this valley. The cave is beautiful where you can have a cup of coffee (35 (san go/coral) coffee), which is made in Okinawa and other drinks while waiting for the tour. (Or you can go there just to have drinks). The tour ends in the property of Okinawa world where you can watch Super Eisa for free if you do the tour of Valley of Gangala, so if you plan to go to Okinawa world as well, I recommend you to do Valley of gangala first, then Okinawa world. *You do have to purchase extra tickets for certain part of Okinawa world. Since this is a review of Valley of Gangala, I will not go into Okinawa world review here, but since I didn't know that I end up in Okinawa world after the tour, I thought it might be a helpful information for some people. I totally recommend a visit to Valley of Gangala!

Daisenkirinzan - a forested nature park with fantastic geological formations is a great place for children and adults to be free-spirited; allowing creativity to see what you want to see in the amazing rock formations. There are natural formations that look like a cat, a T-Rex, a gorilla, a crocodile; a place where you see what your eyes want you to see. The trails are clearly marked and easy to walk. There are thoughtful gestures like walking sticks/wooden staff and umbrellas provided by the park. The stone museum at the end of the walk is well curated and informative. The best part of this museum is that you can touch the exhibits.

Perhaps the perfect place if you are looking for a beach getaway during a trip to Okinawa. Unspoilt sand, great snorkelling, loads of good local restaurants, a campsite right next door. Couldn't think of anywhere better to while away a beach break.

Zamamijima Island

Reviewed By Excursion739114

Fab sea kayaking with Zamami's Kerama Kayaking. Great boats, equipment, and excellent service from Miami, who prepared the boats, supervised, taught, helped, cooked Okinawan lunch on remote beaches, and helped us to snorkel the corals. Her English helped a lot, with my limited Japanese.. Did 3 day tours, each stunning and great kayaking. Zamami is tiny, 600 people, village atmosphere, buzzing in summer I heard, but beautifully peaceful in January. Enough nice restaurants, bars, izakayas. Good e-bike rental to tour the very hilly landscape.
