Montibelli is a great birding spot in the dry tropical forest. Fairly easy roads and trails meander around shade grown coffee fields, edged by forest, offering good visibility of multiple habitats. Eduardo is a talented guide with a keen eye. The staff are friendly. The accommodations are rustic, but comfortable. The coffee is great. The food is good, and we ate everything offered at our meals (without any issues). Some highlights: Northern Potoo, Ferr. Pygmy Owl, Turq. br. Motmot, Collared Aracari, several Trogons, and a variety of Hummingbirds, Flycatchers, and Warblers. 70+ species over a few relaxed paced days. Take in the Chocoyero Reserve while you're here. It's just down the road (thought it is a bumpy and slow road...).

Great family hike. Takes about an hour total to see the waterfall. Take the guide - total less than $10 including entry. Gorgeous nature.

This is the national zoo of Nicaragua. This zoo is actually quite nice. We went with our child, who is 7 years old and he enjoyed it very much. Do bring water or Electrolyte (Nicaragua's version of Pedialyte) with you; as it may get hot. This zoo is small compared to those in the U. S. and Europe but it is definitely worth making the trip; especially if you have children. Note that you cannot take any outside food in with you. They have a small snack shop that sells hot dog's, hamburgers, and tejadas con queso (fried plantain chips with fried cheese topped with salad). There are lots of birds, monkeys, reptiles, and big cats. They have some beautiful big cats there that are probably very nice to see when they are awake. They also have two white tigers. There is alot of transportation options when going to the Zoologico Nacional. Make sure to plan a ride back if you are staying in Managua because mototaxis (caponeras) rarely enter the zoo and neither do taxis as they don't have entry. The only option would be to ride the bus; which does get crowded rather quickly.
