The Guánica State Forest & Bioshpere Reserve (Bosque Estatal de Guánica, in Spanish) is an great example of a dry forest, as compared to the rain forests found elsewhere on the island. Covering almost 1,000 acres, it has been designated as a United Nations International Biosphere Reserve. The forest offers many well-maintained trails and is a bird-watcher’s paradise.
This is one of our favorite places to hike and bird watch in Puerto Rico. It is quiet and a great counterpoint to the El Yunque rainforest. Per the signage, the visitors' area is open 8:30-4:00 pm, Tuesday-Sunday and holidays. There are restrooms and several picnic benches for meals. Sadly, the education center was destroyed during the 2020 earthquake (there are plans to build a newer and reinforced building). The upper trail is somewhat greener and shadier, and can be done in about an hour. We suggest taking the small trail spur (El Vigia) to the valley overlook. Good place for a picnic too. If you want to get a fuller sense of the dessert-like vegetation, then you'll also want to do the Ballena trail. For some reason, we've never done the full Fuerte trail (next time!). Bring water and sun protection. Start early, if possible. A guide is not essential, but be aware that many of the birds are often heard rather than seen.
