10 Nature & Parks in Camden That You Shouldn't Miss

June 19, 2021 Jeremy Dunfee

Camden, Maine is proud to call itself the "Jewel of the Coast." A beautiful seaport town with a harbor full of sail boats, Camden has been used as the setting for so many movies, from Carousel to Peyton Place, that it is what many people think of when they think of New England. With a series of annual festivals running all year round, including the US Toboggan Championships, the Summer HarborArts Juried Arts & Craft Show and Windjammer Weekend, there is always something to do in Camden.

Although it was a bit gray, foggy, and wanting to rain, it was well worth the short drive to the top of Mount Mattie. What a great view of the exquisite coast of Maine.

Camden Hills State Park

Thirty miles of hiking trails keep the staunchest hiker trekking along.

Reviewed By cardou27 - Greenwich, United States

Great views overlooking the harbor of Camden from Mount Battie and an informative map on the top (near the stone tower which is currently closed for Covid) showing the surrounding islands. A leisurely drive to the top of about 1.25 miles or a hike from one of the many parking lots. Also, plenty of hiking trails of a variety of difficulty and parking for campers.

Megunticook Lake

We are privileged to watch the leaves change on this beautiful lake just 5 miles from Camden, ME. We are camped out in a lovely house along the lake and are astonished at the breath-taking views of the surrounding area. Plenty of walks. We particularly like the nearby Fernald Preserve. For those who want a more serious climb, there are plenty of trails leading to and around Mount Battie.

Bald Mountain Preserve

Our local family took us on a hike to the Summit of Bald Mountain. It was a gorgeous sunny day which previously the night before it snowed. So it was a bit icy once we hit the "just right" elevation and we were all prepared. We hit a few saddleback giving us great views. Once we hit the Summit we got the reward, the views were incredible.

Camden Snow Bowl

Reviewed By RichO217 - Wells, United States

This may seem like a contradictory review :-) There was only one lift open and the wait was 15 minutes. There were just 3 trails of man-made snow. Each run took about 90 seconds. We could hardly see the ocean because the lift to the summit was closed. Still, we had a wonderful time! We generally ski 25 times each winter. Sunday River, Killington, Sugarloaf, Loon, Sugarbush, etc. However, due to COVID-19, we deferred our IKON passes until next year. We were at the Samoset for the week and this was only 20 minutes away. That they had any snow at all was a miracle. Bought tickets on Liftopia the night before. The staff was great and everyone seemed to be having a great time.
