The north Indian city of Varanasi, or Benares, is regarded as sacred by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. Situated in the fertile Ganga valley and on the banks of the Ganges, Varanasi is a place of pilgrimage for Hindus, who come to bathe in the holy river. Known as the City of Temples and a beacon of culture, Varanasi has produced many renowned writers. It’s also a center of silk weaving, so practice haggling at the chaotic bazaar for some beautiful souvenirs. Rickshaws are the best way to get about.

"In the heart of the holy city of India and of the globe, the blessed Kashi, where you can see the numbers walk among people, where you can entrust all of your thoughts to the Lord of meditation, there is a new magic place now. The Mehta Art Gallery, run by Amit Kumar, is a gathering room where both pilgrims and inhabitants, tourists and travelers may enjoy a new dimension of sharing ideas.

The museum has a great collection of clay and bronze sculpture, paintings, silks and embroidered textiles.
This museum was an unexpected highlight of our visit to Varanasi. It’s collections are outstanding, and beautifully displayed with excellent lighting for sculpture and a spacious arrangement of materials on view. Overall, an exceptional experience and highly recommended to get an overview of Indian art, especially sculpture, painting (miniatures/album paintings and book illustrations), textiles, and don’t miss the treasury (strong room)!
