Long the home of Portugal’s monarchs, Sintra is a magnificent town of marvelous historic mansions, all set against the backdrop of lush hills. Sintra’s many castles include the Palácio Nacional de Sintra (a main abode of Portuguese royalty until the early 20th century), the hilltop and storybook Palácio da Pena, Quinta de Regaleira (incorporating several architectural styles and with gorgeous surrounding gardens), the Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish Castle), and the Palácio de Monserrate.

The Texeira studio is now an art musuem displaying their collection of marble art.
The national palaces and the moorish castle tend to dominate when it comes to planning a visit but there are several very fine little musuems to consider and which makes it highly desirable to spend at least one night, if not two, in Sintra. The Museu Anjos Teixeira falls into the small but very good category. Even then, you should allow at least an hour to admire sculptures and drawings by both father Artur and son Pedro. The collection is housed in Pedro's home, surprisingly secluded in a spot between the train station area and the Palacio Nacional. A lovely walk to get there.

Portugal's first contemporary art museum houses a fine collection of 20th-century painting and sculpture gathered together by financier José Berardo.
The Sintra Arts Museum (Museu das Artes de Sintra or MU.SA) is a beautiful building with a great museological space that has been investing in great exhibitions, like the one on Nadir Afonso that is about to end. The staff was incredibly nice, knowledgeable and helpful.
