Touching Belgium on its west and just a few miles from Germany to the east, Maastricht is the capital of Holland’s southernmost region, Limburg. A town rich in history and culture, Maastricht boasts two wonderful town squares: Vrijthof, with Sint-Servaas Church, Sint-Jan's Cathedral and many bars, cafes and restaurants; and Markt, home to the town hall and, on Wednesday and Friday mornings, a fantastic vendor market. The city’s Vestigingswerken, or old town fortifications, are another big draw.

We heard about Roman ruins in Maastricht and began researching the history of the city. It's recommended you do the same before visiting. The Romans chose to build a road through Maastricht to Cologne and a fortress and temple along the West side of the river. The Derlon cellar includes sections of the road, an old well, artifacts found from the site, including parts of a statue. The site extends under more buildings in the neighborhood, this is the only spot we know if that you can see some of the original and reconstructions. The Derlon owner decided to preserve this site. You can visit for free on Sundays, 1200-1600. Other times you can make a reservation to eat with history.

It's a very nice passage to walk along and understand a bit of Maastricht's history. Very pleasant and a lot to read and look at.

Art museum featuring archaeological finds from the province of Limburg, sculptures from the Maasland (1300-1550A.D.) and paintings of south Holland (1500-1750A.D.)
I was particularly taken by the work of Kahlil Joseph’s work ‘BLK NWS’. A moving look at the history and state of affairs for African Americans. It is a moving piece. I hope that everyone takes the time to watch this film. Upstairs the work of Mark Manders was interesting and thought provoking. The old masters was also worth visiting. Especially interesting to me the still life hunting scenes. Had lunch in the museum restaurant Ipanema. A good way to round up an interesting visit.

When we planned a weekend in Maastricht with our two children (aged 6 and 4), we decided immediately that we had to visit the Natural History Museum. And boy, am I happy that we did! This museum might seem small at first, but it is not. It is filled with great exhibits, interesting to both children and adults. There are lots of interactive bits and pieces, including a great bird section in which you get to hear various types of bird song. The museum is located slightly out of the center of Maastricht, near the university library (5-10 minute walk from Vrijthof). I highly recommend this museum - not only for the information on the locally found dinosaur (Mosasaurus), but for all the little things you get to learn and see.
