Fascinating museum and great to learn the story behind the Tanzanzite gemstone. I was greeted by Tabitha and she did a great job throughout the visit. I appreciated the informative and short documentary and then the replica of mine shaft and then seeing the actual raw stones, learning about the stone quality and then the jewelry prices. Overall the prices were high but was able to find some reasonable pieces. Later in the airport as I was looking in the other shops, the prices were the same, so I am glad I got my pieces here. I felt no pressure to buy anything which is always positive. Instead, it was very friendly and cordial. They even offered some cookies and coffee. Glad that I was able to finally visit as the Museum was closed on my initial day in Arusha due to the Election holiday.

One of the biggest onsite museum in Africa located at the excavation site of Olduvai Gorge and near Laetoli Footprints site. The museum exhibits the earliest evidence found in Olduvai Gorge and Laetoli Footprints that holds earliest evidence of the existence of human ancestors. The museum also showcases other findings from elsewhere in Africa.
I was delighted to find this excellent, small museum telling to story of human evolution and highlighting discoveries from the Olduvai Gorge area. Beautiful round shaped museum with dioramas, fossils and interpretations of major periods of human evolution. Fascinating to see our early ancestors footprints preserved in ancient volcanic ash fields with a diorama depiction of how it was made. Don't forget to see the small detached gift shop with fossil bones of giraffes, hippos, rhinos, water buffalos and pictures of Louis and Mary Leeky.

An interesting mixture of history, environment and culture. I'm a little surprised at the critical reviews here for the Boma/Arusha Natural History Museum. Yes it is a little run down, exhibitions might be old but it is still a good place to visit. I'm not sure what others expect from small city run museums. There are different exhibitions in each building. The first building takes you through the development of mankind, nature and some other stuff. The second building has a small exhibition on German colonialism in Tanganyika. The third building contains stuffed animals and a great photo exhibition from Dick Persson of birds, insects and animals. In the grounds are some large turtles roaming around. There is also a small botanical garden, the entrance is hard to find but just behind the museum office. In the botanical garden there are a nice variety of plants. As others have mentioned the entry fee is 12,000 TZS, I paid through TigoPesa, nice and easy.
Art by Sungi curates and sells art by artist Sungi Mlengeya. Take the chance to meet the artist at her studio in Arusha, get to see her most recent works and find a favorite pick to remind you of your trip. Marvel in her rich portfolio of paintings that never misses out on beautiful portraits of the City; as she is always trying to convey the abundance of character from faces that inspire her.
