Tanaka Isson only posthumously became famous and acknowledged unfortunately. He is sometimes compared to Paul Gauguin in that he was attracted in a Southern Island and stayed there in the last time of his life. He is in other times compared to Henri Rousseau in that his brush strokes resemble those of Rousseau’s especially in one of his greatest works, “Kuwazuimo to Sotetsu.” I highly recommend you visit this museum.

The Amami Wildlife Center was set up by the Ministry of Environment in order to help preserve the ecosystem and creatures of the Amami Archipelago. The facility conducts research on rare local wildlife such as amami rabbits, and also plays a role in controlling mongooses, an invasive species to the islands. Through the use of exhibits and nature tours, the center aims to boost understanding and interest in wildlife conservation, and acts as a general base for initiatives towards recognizing Amami-Oshima Island, Tokunoshima Island, Northern Okinawa Island and Iriomote Island as a collective World Natural Heritage site.
