The natives living on the floating islands use a number of different boats (some of them are modern with gas engines) to get around and to do the daily chores, but the big reed boats (made in town by experts that have the tools to build such large boats) shown in the picture are not made by the natives. These are "show boats" to handle big tourists crowds to move you from one floating island to another. From what we could gather, the boats are not historic in nature. These are very slow and tough to move (the natives do the owrk for you) in between the isoans. However, for abotu

My son was travelling for 4 months in South America and when he asked if I'd like to accompany him to trek and see Machu Pichu I jumped at the chance. The trek was superbly agonised and the food was amazing! I wouldn't say it was easy for a 54 year old but my son and the group and guide we were with kept me going. Worth every day of waking up at 4:45am with a cup of cocoa tea delivered to you! Our guide, Felix, was so knowledgeable about all the history, land and culture so we were well educated along every step of the way. We had the add-ons, with the poles, sleeping bags and the extra day hike to Rainbow Mountain. Totally recommend it to anyone that wants to do it in style and enjoy it!

We LOVED this spot...it was the highlight of our trip and we are so glad that we did it! Highly recommend the experience! Our family did not do a guided tour so I can't speak to that. We were in our personal vehicle and drove from Huanuco to Huallay. The drive took about 3 hours and most of it was the Carretera Central, the heavily-trafficked 2-lane highway that links Lima to the jungle side of Peru. We went up to 14366 feet but dropped back down to about 13500ish when we got to Huallay. Huallay is a national park with an exorbitant s/2 (about 75 cents) entrance fee,. There is parking next to the entrance. You can also request a guide for the hikes that they offer...one is a 3-hour route and the other is 5 hours. Our group preferred to just take off on our own...the route is marked fairly clearly and honestly there is a lot of just open plain so it's not hard to get your bearings and head back to the entrance. It was about 40 degrees, I think...our jungle crew was not well equipped--we were in layers with a fleece, tennis shoes, and wool hats and gloves purchased in Huanuco--but we were not too cold. The ground is marshy, so be prepared for damp feet. We also took in thermoses with hot water for mate de coca, as well as snacks. The park itself is amazing! Our kids had a fantastic time climbing and exploring and hiking. Thankfully no one got altitude sickness although we were all developing headaches by the time we left about 4 hours later. We are so very glad that we went!

We had 2 nights in the Amazon at Amazona Posadas. We packed in a lot to very little time. The lodge was beautiful and very comfortable, food was excellent. Our guide was very good but seemed a bit disinterested at times. Very knowledgeable. We then went to Cusco, had a walking tour and cooking class. Our new guide, Albero was excellent. Our cooking class with Jesus was fun, very accommodating. We then moved on to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. Highly recommend the hike at MP Mountain. Our guide was very supportive and patient! Next we then went to the Rainbow Mountain. Unfortunately, though I requested we NOT go to Vinicunca, that is where we were taken. It was very beautiful, but very crowded. I did not understand why we did not go to Palcoyo. Was told later it was not accessible due to landslides. This may have been the case, but was unhappy about the lack of transparency prior to embarking. Overall, we were very happy with our experience and grateful to have completed it before the travel restrictions were set in place for the COVID pandemic.

The tour didn’t pick up from our hotel as we stayed out of the city but for a small fee they picked us up anyway. They were easy to contact and happy to help leading up to the trip. The day was perfect! Boat was so comfortable and clean with access to a toilet. Once it got hit we were able to sit on top. Food served was delicious and cooked by locals. Views were beautiful.

Day is long. They picked us up at 6:40 and we got home at 22:00. But we ate, drank, sang, danced, laughed and saw Machu Picchu and came back full and happy. The level of service is what you would expect with the price. EVERYONE and I sincerely mean EVERYONE who worked on this trip was cheerful, polite, competent. Madai and Cesar in the train restaurant as well as the bartender whose name I didn’t get were top notch. Our guide Carlos took us in a small group of 8 to Machu Picchu and he gave us great information and didn’t rush. He was with us all day and knew my name. The day starts with a pick up at your hotel then a drop off at a bus where you ride to a train station. At the train station there is a snack, music playing, local dancing. NEVER was anyone looking for a tip - again a class operation. Henry the manager was also with us all day and attended to everyones needs. At this train station you board the special upscale Hiram Binham train with a lovely dining car (cloth tablecloths) very nice bar (all drinks are included) and a room past the bar where you can get in the open air for photos. The organization was good. The musicians who played in the bar are were excellent - great mix of rock and spanish music and knew every song anyone requested. By the return trip the group was dancing and singing and refused to go to dinner without another song. The two meals were abundant and well prepared. Here again - excellent service and you could request a different meal if you wanted to. The train gets as far as Aguas Calientes then you have a bus (short ride) to the entrance to Machu Picchu. If you want to spend many hours in Machu Picchu this is not your trip. We only spent 2.5 - 3 hours at the site. It was enough for us. We also had some rain but that is beyond control. You feel very pampered and VIP on this trip. I liked t!
