Fujian (Chinese: 福建; pinyin: Fújiàn; pronounced [fǔtɕjɛ̂n] ( listen)), formerly romanised as Foken, Fouken, Fukien, and Hokkien, is a province on the southeast coast of mainland China. Fujian is bordered by three provinces: Zhejiang to the north, Jiangxi to the west and Guangdong to the south, along with Taiwan 150 km to the east, across the Taiwan strait. The name Fujian came from the combination of Fuzhou and Jianzhou (a former name for Jian'ou) two cities in Fujian, during the Tang dynasty. While its population is chiefly of Han origin, it is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse provinces in China.

DO NOT use this tour company if you are not from China. Our experience was nothing but a huge disaster. We ended up paying to literally experience the land on our own and get completely lost and we were not able to enjoy the beauty the rice terraces had to offer. The tour company only gave back half our money after all the struggles we went through and many many emails later.

Our English speaking guide, Jane, who was Hakka, was interesting and informative, we visited 3 of the Tulou, each one slightly different, and such a unique style of communal living - where some are living to this day, I can see this style of living will cease to exist in generations to come as it is isolated and lacks some basic facilities, at a certain age the ‘young’ are leaving for the towns and cities. The countryside is interesting with its rice terraces, banana and fruit plantations. There were racks of Persimmons and vegetables sun drying outside the fortified walls, and we got to taste some of these at the Hakka style food lunch in a restaurant in one of the villages. Janes part of the private tour we were on was a 5/5, we were picked up by car at our hotel, the driver did not speak English, and the car was a medium size sedan (with bright red interior), so there was not much leg room for my husband who is reasonably tall, and the drive is 2-3 hours each way, Jane met us nearer the villages. You will want to be warned about the driving...the drivers drive these roads daily, so know what they are doing, but it is terrifying to someone not used to the aggressive style, weaving in and out of traffic, the continual use of the horn....Wouldn’t recommend the private driver for nervous passengers.

Delicious and delicate. The food in Guangzhou is the best. The old town is worth visiting if you want to know history and cultures of Guangzhou. Travelling in Guangzhou is not so difficult except for some language problems until recently the GZ government has had an interpretation hotline(+8620960169), which can provide great service for public affairs and government services. I used several times taking taxi and asking for directions, the interpreters are quite professional.

I have travelled with YAT Travel since 2018 and the places that I went with them are North-East China, Harbin, Heilongjiang, Guizhou, West Sichuan and the most recent one that I went is the Silk Road and North Xinjiang. All together they were 3 long tours, all covering more than 20 days in each trip. I find this travel agency reliable and they deliver what were promised in the itineraries. They guides that were assigned to us are passionate and responsible in their duties..namely Zach and Jason whom I have the privilege to meet. Both of them went all the way out to make sure their guests are comfortable and well taken care of. If not for the pandemic the whole world is facing now, I would have gone with YAT for my fourth trip and that is to Yunnan Photography Tour in March this year. When the trip was cancelled due to the pandemic our deposits were promptly refunded by the company to our much relieved. If you plan to see China as a traveller and not seeing the usual touristy stuff which is often jam packed and very commercialised I would highly recommend YAT Travel. They will bring you to see the real interesting China and not forgetting to mention the delicious local food they bring to.

We were picked up by a driver who was on time and in an acceptable vehicle. He could not speak English but communicated using a telephone app. So far so good. We drive 2.5 hours and picked up the guide Jane. Her English was extremely poor and I could only understand 50% of what she was saying. We were taken to one area, “the Scenic Area of Hakka Cultural Village in Fujian Tulou”. We were told there was a 5 kilometer walk to see three sites. We noticed there were golf carts taking some Chinese tourists, and we suggested taking one so that we could see more sights. The guide refused. First she said it cost more, and I offered to pay. Then she said they were only for locals. On the way back, she tried to hail one, but unsuccessfully. The information she conveyed in her broken English was less than you could get in 15 minutes of reading Wikipedia. We walked 4km and it took 1.5 hours and then she said that was it. I asked about lunch. I was under the impression that lunch would be in the village with real Hakka food. She said we would drive to a restaurant. I asked why we did not see any of the older Tulou. The ones we saw were 20th century with only one from the 19th Century. I had to tell her that I wanted to sample the local rice wine, she did not suggest it. We got to the restaurant and she suggested two dishes, beef and chicken. We said we wanted a vegetable dish too. She ordered it and said we would have to pay 40 RMB since our food allowance was 60 RMB per person. That is less than $10 per person. We had paid $299 per person. At that point I had had enough and I called Silk Roads tour. They said that the guide was wrong and we would not have to pay 40 RMB. I also said that I was upset that the tour was only 1.5 hours and that we had seen only 3 of the newer Tulou. Then the food came and the chicken dish was inedible. Skin and bones. I should note that you can go to good Hakka restaurants in all major Chinese cities. I should also note that the Chinese tour groups in the restaurants were having huge meals. I told Jane the chicken was terrible and I was still hungry. The agency had called her after my complaint (actually I had to call twice and she said we didn’t have to pay 40 RMB and that we could order anything we wanted. So I said that I wanted shrimp. She said they were all out of shrimp. I settled for Hakka tofu. Probably the cheapest dish on the menu. Then she asked if I wanted to see more Tulou. I said that for $598 I wanted to see all important sites that you could see in one day. They took us to one nearby Tulou from 1912 I believe. There was no admission fee which I suppose is why they took us there. I said what about the older Tulou? She said they were 15km away and it would take 20 minutes and it was not included in our tour. We got back to the hotel at 4:30. In total we spent 5.5 hours in the car, less than 2 hours visiting Tulou and 45 minutes at lunch. And we did not see the most important site which is called Tianluokeng. In short the trip was a complete rip-off and I did not see the most important cluster of Tulou. Be forewarned.
Spend two wonderful days to discover the beautiful Mt Guanzhai with her charming Danxia landscape, strange peaks and lake, and the Peitian Ancient Buildings, actually a village with 800 years of history, is a well-kept ancient architecture complex with typical architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Peitian Village is more than just an ancient village teemed with Ming and Qing styled buildings, it is a beautiful manor, a water and mountain painting, a history book of Hakka people and Hakka culture. Guanzhai Mountain was evaluated as one of the first 4A national level spots in 2000, nominated into the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site list in 2008 and titled a "National Geopark" in 2009. Perfect places to go for a trip retreat away from the crowd of tourists.
