A full time cinema that has been showing films continuously since 1922! The foyer is a mini museum dedicated to the Golden Age of Cinema.
Lovely little gem of a picture house with a old fashioned interval accompanied by an organists. Well worth the visit and looking forward to a return visit.

We're back, with cinema screenings and the wonderful Eat Me Cafe operating from our first floor space! The home of truly great theatre. Let us transport you to new worlds and enjoy new experiences through the magic of theatre – no trip to Scarborough would be complete without it! We offer a unique, intimate experience in our renowned theatre-in-the-round as well as the more traditional end-on McCarthy theatre and cinema. The SJT has been and is known for its commitment to new writing throughout its 61 years not to mention Alan Ayckbourn’s 80 World Premieres. It is home to excellent drama, music, films, comedy and live streaming and has been the starting point for many, now familiar names.
We rented the Snow Queen from the theatre, which was filmed with a small audience when social distancing and masks still permitted a few visitors in the audience. My children aged 3 and 6 were gripped! Having been to a few of the theatres live productions in the past, they were disappointed that we were unable to make the journey back from Switzerland to Scarborough this year to be with family, and the visit to the theatre being impossible was almost a tragedy for them. This rentals opportunity really made their day! A theatre experience in our living room, with popcorn interval too - but I had to pour my own glass of wine sadly ???? The performance was incredible - one actor giving it her all. The enthusiasm, the switch between characters, so much energy - she never faltered. The music and lighting also brought a perfect atmosphere to the show, and the editing was seamless. A very impressive piece of work by a small town theatre - I strongly recommend this show to anyone with children aged 3 and up.

What a fabulous venue this is, a real old world feel, comfy leather seats, fantastic customer service, good choice of snacks and unfathomably inexpensive tickets. This is the place to come and watch your movies.

The Rex has one huge screen set in a glorious 1938 art-deco proscenium with the sharpest film projection and clearest non-booming sound anywhere in the world. Throughout, its seating is big and soft. It has been called luxurious. It is better. It is civilized. It reminds us of what we have long stopped expecting from public buildings.
Been a few times and it's always a treat as Berkhamsted is not close to our home. Love sitting down front at a table and getting a cheese and crackers plate. Staff always friendly at box office and bar. Every time I go I wish all cinemas were like this.

The Rebel is a traditional style cinema showing the latest Big Screen releases.
We went and saw Miltary Wives, coming from a city where there are lots of cinemas we were delighted to find an independent cinema that gave us an overall better experience. The staff were friendly and helpful, the cinema was clean, comfortable seats with ample leg room. Would definitely visit again when in the area.

I love it here, I’d much rather go to the palace than drive to York for the big chain cinemas. Plenty of legroom and reasonably priced snacks and drinks.

The Alhambra screens current films daily in a 105-year old heritage auditorium with magnificent digital quality. The best of the World's theatre, ballet and opera are relayed live by satellite several times a month.
Thank you for an experience from the past. A lovely old fashioned single screen cinema. Very friendly with complimentary tea and coffee before the film. Excellent value compared to some of the modern multi screen cinemas these days. Always love going to the Alhambra.
