As soon as i discovered that there was a monument to this monk i had to go and see it for myself as i grew up during the Vietnam War and remember the famous photo of the monk burning in the street. The monument is really well sculptured showing the flames of the fire as he was burning. There is lots of information about this monk in the compound.

This area like the square with Thu Mother statue. You should prepare the umbrella or hat, because the weather is so hot! Opposite with this park, there are some small restaurant, take a break and enjoy fresh coconut, really nice! Gluck!

This was the focal point of the Viet Minh victory over the French in 1954. It's a really well-maintained location with lots of old trenches and bunkers and even some barbed wire (not original, of course). You have to climb to the top of the hill to see an ex-US tank that the US provided to France...France then disassembled the tanks and flew them in and reassembled them. There's also the massive crater the Vietnamese created when they tunneled under the French position and detonated nearly 1000 kg. Continue out the exit and there is a coffee shop where the French Prime Minister enjoyed a coffee.

From the city centre, we took a taxi to the Buu Long (Buddhist) Temple (and just before that, we also stopped by a Vietnamese Chinese Temple). We spent about 30 minutes in and around the temple complex, but the temple itself was closed for viewing during out visit. It was certainly worthwhile making the one hour's journey by taxi from the city centre to the Buu Long (Buddhist) Temple.

Every time I come down to Vung Tau, I climb the 811 stairs. If you want to visit inside the statue, don't wear a singlet (men or women). Obviously, the various views are wonderful and make up for the hard work climbing!

We came upon the memorial after leavingTran Quoc Pagoda. It's just a minute or two walk from there. Surprised to see Senator McCain immortalized like this in a country he fought during the "American War." His plane crashed in the lake here. What made our visit special was coming upon two former North Vietnamese soldiers at the memorial who had fought during that time. They were very eager to speak with us (through our guide) when they realized we were from the States. They insisted on having a photo taken with all of us. It was very humbling.
