The Eastern Cape is a province of South Africa. Its capital is Bhisho, but its two largest cities are Port Elizabeth and East London. It was formed in 1994 out of the Xhosa homelands of Transkei and Ciskei, together with the eastern portion of the Cape Province. Landing place and home of the 1820 settlers, the central and eastern part of the province is the traditional home of the Xhosa people.

This memorial on Gunfire Hill is dominated by the stunning Settlers Garden.
To some the history of the British 1820 Settlers can invoke strong feelings. The most amazing thing I noted about this monument, was how the rich history of Makhanda morphed around the old history. While it is called the Settlers Monument, the Battle of Grahamstown made for a more fascinating history lesson.

It is easy to pass by the memorial without knowing the history of it. The memorial is part of the complex history of the Boer War & it is worth stopping & reading the citations to gain an insight in to why this is important ....

It was a rare windless day in PE, so went down to Schoenmakerskop. It was very tranquil down there and we walked around the cannon and reading it's history.
