The story of the rebirth of Springfield’s Union Station was a 40-year saga that began with a promise to save a landmark that was teetering on the brink of extinction. On December 19, 1926, an estimated 30,000 people toured Opening Day of Union Station. The new facility with its gleaming terrazzo floors, had a restaurant, lunch counter, barbershop, shoeshine parlor and small shops to service hundreds of daily passengers who boarded up to 130 trains every 24 hours. The reconstruction of Union Station lasted four years and one month finishing in 2016. The great hall was gutted to the bare walls and rebuilt. The historic clock that hung at the entrance to the tunnel since the building opened, to a wooden train schedule board and 90-year-old baggage carts the original Terrazzo floors were all preserved. In addition to the train station there is an intermodal transportation center with local and long-distance buses, a new parking garage, office, retail and restaurant space.

I visited the Union Station in Springfield MA again recently, for the first time since the COVID-19 crisis began. I wanted to update my thoughts and impressions of the place and see how they were handling things. I'm happy to report that the station continues to be convenient and welcoming for all travelers by train, city bus and long-distance bus lines. They are taking appropriate measures to prevent the spread of disease, including requiring masks and allowing only ticketed passengers into the main concourse. They also are blocking off seats so you will not be too close to the other people. Benches are off-limits for now. Dunkin remains open as well as the convenience store where you can get all kinds of snack items. You can also purchase tickets from either ticket counters or machines located on the property. You can now also buy tickets through apps from Amtrak, CTrail and now even PVTA (local bus service) as well as Peter Pan and Greyhound. I recommend this place to all travelers. Clean and safe and taking proper precautions in this time of pandemic.

Yes, there is easy transportation from the Boston cruise port to town or the airport--get tickets at the design center hardware store cashier's desk The desk is inside the Backstage Hardware store at 23 Drydock Ave. (across the street from the port terminal building, but you have to go around the building to the front side to enter the store). Since this is a store inside the shopping center/design center, it is open only during normal shopping hours, so please look up their hours and consider calling them to find out if they will be open when you are there. You also want to make sure they have and sell the transportation product you want before you rely on them for your public transportation support (Charlie tickets/Charlie card/other passes or rail tickets, etc). They were great when we went there to load more money on our Charlie Card but we were there on a weekday at 10am (we got the card at a subway station on a prior visit). Why buy a pre-paid ticket instead of paying cash on the Silver Line Tram? 3 reasons: - prepaid cards/tickets cost less per ride, they allow for easier transfers between trains (T-services, subway, buses, etc) without being charged again and again, and it is really convenient because it is pre-loaded with your funds and doesn't require having exact change. And a Charlie Card can be used for multiple people traveling together (as long as there is enough money on the card to pay for everyone’s ride). One person stands at the entry of each gate/bus/etc and uses the card for each person by tapping the card on the chip reader as each person enters. The person with the card boards/enters last as they tap the card on the reader one final time for him/herself. They repeat this at each exit or entry point, as needed. The subway map shows where the lines run and the cruise port has a few stops for the Silver Line #2 route that can connect you to other lines throughout the city. It was a nice, easy way to get around.

Last summer, my wife and I rode the commuter rail from Wachusetts (near Fitchburg) to Boston North Station and return after the MBTA started its $10/person/weekend Summer Special. Parking was free. Now this fantastic program has been extended for all weekends. You can ride the entire weekend for only ten dollars. Residents, visitors, and business travelers can take advantage of this special fare. I believe that this special fare will encourage new riders to use passenger rail during the weekdays.

This shuttle saved us when we were too tired to continue our bike ride. Although they no longer carry bikes they delivered us to our car park and we could then drive to pick up our bikes. Had a little tour of Provincetown on the way. Charlie was the most accommodating driver and you can tell that customer service and courtesy to tourists are high priorities for him. Thanks
