Popular spot. Good place for picking up buses, taxis or the great Green Train down to the coastal resort of Camara dos Lobos You will pay through the nose at the cafe - tea, coffee and custard tarts @ €15 would almost buy a meal for two with wine locally

My wife and myself are currently holidaying in Madeira and earlier today we went on an excellent East Island Tour arranged by Blandy Travel. Part of the Tour included a one hour Levada Walk - on an well marked (if a little uneven in places) path - from Ribeiro Frio to Balcoes. This was largely uneventful until reaching the Balcoes View point which - particularly on the nice clear and sunny day we were blessed with - offers stunning views of the adjacent Peaks. The icing on the cake was the 6-10 colourful and relatively friendly Finches who are used to receiving tit bits from the large number of visitors to the Viewpoint. All in all, a most enjoyable walk - one well suited for the less able walkers.
