10 Lodges in South Dakota: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 19, 2023 Velvet Champine

South Dakota has good golf courses, skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, hiking, and biking among rolling prairies, pine forests, and granite mountain peaks like Mount Rushmore. Glacial lakes and Missouri River reservoir lakes provide great fishing, boating, canoeing, water skiing, and windsurfing. The whole family will enjoy this prairie land where grain growing begat roadside attractions like the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Everything made from corn, even the popcorn, tastes better here. Where buffalo roam, roadside diners serve up buffalo and luscious homemade fruit pies. Shop for good deals on cowboy boots on the same Black Hills and Badland Main Streets where cowboys and cowgirls outfit themselves. Be near the eroded buttes, spires, and prairie grasslands of Badlands National Park in Lead, Deadwood, Rapid City, Spearfish, Sturgis, Hill City, Custer, and other nearby towns. The whole family will enjoy watching for big game like bison, bighorn sheep, antelope, eagles, and hawks. Drive the one-hour Hwy 240 loop road, with a side-trip to Robert's Prairie Dog Town. Learn about the Oglala Sioux Tribe at the White River Visitor Center, which is near Wounded Knee. Tour the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site's Cold War nuclear silos, just outside the Park's boundaries. About 90 minutes west of Badlands National Park is Mount Rushmore. Lead, Deadwood, Rapid City, Spearfish, Sturgis, Hill City, Whitetail Springs, and Custer are also very near Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, and Jewel Cave National Monument. View Mount Rushmore from the aerial tramway in Keystone, which also houses the Borglum Historical Center celebrating the artist behind the sculpting of Rushmore. Take the kids to the Dinosaur Park in Rapid City. Attend Custer State Park’s Annual Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival. Bedazzle the whole family with sparkling calcite crystals in 151-mile long Jewel Cave. Bison, pronghorn, and elk graze the grasslands of Wind Cave National Park. Central South Dakota has the state capitol, Pierre, in addition to numerous lakes along the Missouri River. Go fishing and boating in the rivers and lakes. Take the kids to the South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium in Pierre to see the state’s native fish. Drop by the Dacotah Prairie Museum along the James River in Aberdeen in the northeast to learn prairie history and natural history. Swing by Sioux Falls to see the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial and special exhibits at the Old Courthouse Museum. Choose from among 10 golf courses in Sioux Falls.

Very reasonable priced and great management

Reviewed By Betty F

What I loved about this place is that is very close to Downtown Rapid City, only 10 minutes drive, also close to the highways we needed to take to do our road trip. Management was very helpful, and supplied all we needed for our longer stay. We rented the studio cabin, which was very spacious, had a kitchenette, and a very small bathroom, so if you are larger in size it might be hard to use the bathroom. The cabins are older, so you must keep that in mind. Nothing fancy, but with enough amenities for those who use the accommodations to sleep and take a shower. We wish we had a view of the lake, but it’s ok, like I say, we only stayed here to sleep and take a shower. I recommend this place, price is very reasonable and they offer free cancellation up to 15 days before your arrival, which for us is a priority

Loved it

Reviewed By Fonzmobile1965

Just a one night stay here whilst travelling but our room here has everything we needed. Great to have a kitchenette with a sink, fridge and microwave. Bed was huge, we could both "starfish" and not touch. The comforter was a bit "out doorsy" for my taste but did the job. Continental breakfast was great, good bread/muffin/donut selection, along with cereal and oatmeal etc. Overall we had a pleasant stay.

Bed bugs!!

Reviewed By X4134AYmiranda

I stayed here one night and was eaten up by bed bugs. I have horrible red itchy welts all over my left arm. So disgusting and made for a miserable vacation after. Stay away from this place!! The walls here are also paper thin and we barely got any rest due to the loud people next door. I would advise traveling down the road a land paying for a quality hotel.

Best place to stay in the Black Hills

We had the Robinson suite, which is the upstairs level of a house that is just steps away from the historic Lodge. The Suite was awesome for a family of four with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, family room, and full kitchen. Even had a washer and dryer in the suite. Not to mention a wrap around upstairs deck that was just for our use! The breakfasts on the front porch of the lodge were outstanding and they kindly accommodated our food allergies. We loved the extras - like gourmet coffee every morning and fridge in the lodge with soda. There was a high tech massage chair in the main lodge that I think we all used at some point during our 5 night stay. The good thing about the location is that it is between the Badlands, Deadwood, and Windcave. Plus it feels rustic, and yet, is only a twenty minute drive from a large grocery store in Rapid City.

Peaceful Place in the Pines

One of a kind experience with great hosts, Jackie and Les. We had a large cabin right by Spearfish Creek, could hear the creek babbling outside our window. Cabin was complete with kitchen everything we needed to prepare meals, three bedroom and full bathroom. The village has a firepit, picnic shelter, many grills and playground. There is a beautiful bridge over the creek where you can sit, relax and watch the trout dart around.
