10 Literary, Art & Music Tours in South Holland Province That You Shouldn't Miss

October 5, 2021 Roger Rusk

Encompassing two of the Netherlands’ three largest cities (Rotterdam and The Hague), Zuid-Holland (South Holland) is also home to important towns like Leiden, Gouda and Delft. And many lovely smaller towns dot the gorgeous green landscape. Alphen aan den Rijn has several interesting attractions, including Dutch history theme park Archeon. Picturesque Kinderdijk, birthplace of the legend of the Cat and the Cradle, also has many windmills that together are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I really enjoyed learning about the 9 Success Factors from the Blue Zones. Sam showed us ways to incorporate these practices from his native Sardinia as we walked through The Hague. My cousin, was already very knowledgeable about this and I was a novice, but we both had a lovely time. Kitty led us to some special gardens in The Hague and showed us what plants are edible and how they can help your body.

We travelled by train to Amsterdam and only saw one windmill - went past too quickly to get a photo. Zaanse Sch.. is a site where working windmills and other traditional Dutch working buildings have been brought together in one place. Plenty to see and do. Visiting inside of windmill was fascinating. The working clogs museum showing how they were traditionally made and more recent "industrial" processes was also worthwhile.

This full day tour, will give you the opportunity to discover The Netherlands, by visiting some very specific highlights in one day. We can extend this tour in 2 or 3 days. We will leave Brussels ?early, and have our first stop in KINDERDIJK. To drain the POLDERS ( land reclaimed ), a system of 19 windmills was built in 1740. This group of mills is the largest concentration of old windmills in The Netherlands. They are classified as UNESCO HERITAGE since 1997. On our way to AMSTERDAM, a must will be to visit wonderful, most historical DELFT . In 1246 Delft received its city franchise from the Dutch Earl Willem II. A must would be to visit the “Royal Delft “ . Established in 1653, this is the last DELFTWARE factory from the 17th. century. The world famous Royal Delftware is still entirely hand painted, according to centuries old traditions. We will have time to walk around and eventually visit the Van Gogh museum or The Anne Frank House ( as an example ).

Thankfully, the battlefield is largely as it appeared in 1815. Rolling hills, farm fields, the wooded and walled Hougoumont (well-restored) and la Haye Saint (not so much). Still, the vibe and the atmosphere is evocative of the crucial Napoleonic struggle that took place here. The museum is excellent. Creative displays, lots of artifacts. The great Lions mound is a bit of a distraction. But it does afford spectacular views of the entire battlefield. Two downsides: the busy road that runs right through the field, north to south, is a little offputting. And Napoleon’s command position was overgrown with shrubs when I was there.
