Papyrus Institute Papyrus is an important part of Egypt’s history. The raw material used to make this ancient paper comes from the stalk of the Cyperus papyrus plant, which has a brittle interior and a tough exterior and grows in damp regions of the Nile Delta. Its method of production was a well-kept secret for many years, allowing the ancient Egyptians to have a monopoly over its production and distribution. The Papyrus Institute is a government-approved museum and shop not far from the Pyramids in Giza, where visitors can browse and buy a huge selection of hand-painted papyrus prints. Prices range from the cheap to the very expensive, but bear in mind that these prints are the authentic article and make for some quality souvenirs. Staff at the Papyrus Institute talk visitors through the entire process of manufacturing papyrus, including a demonstration of exactly how it is made.

I booked a private tour to the pyramids to avoid all the hassle, and it was definitely worth it. The tour was prepaid by credit card and I found the price affordable. All my emails were promptly answered, too. I was picked up right on time by a driver and my guide, Nesma, and as traffic was light, the journey from central Cairo to the pyramids took some 20 minutes only. Nesma gave quick briefs at our stops and I had ample time to look around and take photos. She answered all the questions I had and did her best to accommodate my wishes. Her English was excellent. After the pyramids and the sphinx, we made a quick extra stop at a papyrus shop/factory, where they explained the making and history of papyrus. There was no pressure to buy anything, it was a genuine educational stop and an interesting one at that. I can warmly recommend Emotours. I found them reliable, punctual and knowledgeable.

Prices range in all hands from 5 $ up to 150 $ after you finish you will be dropped back to your Hotel in Cairo What is the Papyrus? The English word papyrus is derived via Latin, from the Greek, papuros. The Arabic word is Bardy or also Warak Bardy meaning Papyrus paper. It is often claimed that Egyptians referred to papyrus as pa-per-aa, literary meaning, that which is of Pharaoh, apparently indicating that the Egyptian crown owned a monopoly on papyrus production, though no actual ancient text using this term is known. Papyrus was very important to the ancient Egyptians as it helped transform Egyptian society in many ways. Once the technology of papyrus making was developed, its method of production was a closely guarded secret allowing the Egyptians to have a monopoly on it as it became the lifeblood for ancient Egypt. It was even exported to many locations in the ancient world. The raw material of papyrus paper comes from the plant Cyperus papyrus, a long stemmed plant that grows in damp regions of the Nile Delta in Egypt.

Our trip to Egypt was amazing! Our driver Mostafa and our guide Ali were very kind and flexible with our hectic schedules during our visit! They waited patiently for us outside the airport once, and another time outside the train station for hours. They also helped us to get our Covid-19 PCR Tests, which are required to travel internationally as of today. They treated us with much love and respect that it was easy to relax and enjoy the landscapes of the city or the mysteries of the pyramids. The camel ride was incredible and it was rather comical that the camels had names like Michael Jackson or 007. Ali was very knowledgeable and it depends on how much interest you have about the subject, he can go into fine detail about any question you might have concerning egyptology. Overall, a great experience that I would recommend everyone to do at least once in their lifetime. The locals are polite and they would like to know you so just be prepared to have random encounters with strangers wanting to know more about your culture and trying to have an exchange of ideas. The Pyramids are truly impressive. You can even see them from the sky when your airplane is getting ready to land in Cairo. One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and the last one standing, is without a doubt something to behold. Thank you Wonders of Egypt Tours!
