InFlorence Academy

The school, the oldest state recognized school of foreign languages in Florence, can be found in Palazzo Guadagni, a Renaissance palace dating from the 16th century which is located in the middle of the old town centre near the Ponte Vecchio. The historic school building, renovated in 1992, has eleven classrooms, a multimedia learning centre, a lecture room and a student lounge and is in a quaint Italian quarter. The school is in the centre of the oldest part of Florence, 300 m from the Pitti Palace, 500 m from the Ponte Vecchio and about 15 minutes' walk from the cathedral (il Duomo) and from the railway station. The building is the work of the architect Cronaca and was built between 1502 and 1508. In the 1860's, it was extensively improved by the architect Poggi with the addition of beautiful frescoes. The school was completely renovated, taking care to enhance the original features but also making use of the best of modern Italian design to produce a stunning mix of new and old.

I have been to the Italian Language School in Venice twice, once for 2 weeks in 2016 and again for a week in 2019. I've attended schools in the U.S., listened to tapes/CDs, and spent 2 weeks at an Italian language school in Bologna. The Italian Language School in Venice is simply the best. The director, Diego, has designed an exemplary program for small groups and individual tutoring. I've done both and in each instance improved my Italian language skills exponentially. I wanted to improve my conversational Italian, and I was able to do that after each of my sessions at the school. It is family run, casual yet structured, with skilled instructors. I will keep going back (and plan to in April 2021). If you want to improve/learn Italian, this is the best school you could choose. And, bonus: it's in Venice!! It gives you an excuse for an extended stay in what I think is the most beautiful city in the world.

I had a wonderful time in Lucca. I stayed the whole month of November and attended LIS every weekday and went on all the after school outings. Grazie Angelo! It was a fabulous month. The teachers and administrators are really supportive and it is so much fun. The city is really interesting and my homestay host was awesome. I was really lucky to be included in social outings and there was always lots of conversation. The location is excellent also - I went to Florence, Pisa, Montecatini Terme and Cinque Terre on weekends. Being a football fan i also went to a Lucchese FC game with friends I met in Lucca. I guess I should mention that I learned a lot of italian! my language skills and confidence went way up for sure.

In October 2018, I had the pleasure of taking a cooking class with Valeria and Barbara, two wonderful ladies, passionate about their craft and equipped with a great sense of humour. The class itself is done in a very professional setting (large kitchen, big table easy to work on etc) but in a very relaxing ambiance. Their passion is contagious and you will not only acquire a skill but also learn to love making food from Emilia-Romagna. I highly recommend spending a few hours at the Salotto di Penelope and if time permits, take the market tour prior to the class. The tour provides you with very useful information on local products that you can use when you go back home. I am already planning my next visit....
