Uchi is a private house newly built in March 2016 in Matsushima to cater the rising popularity of accommodations with local flavor. As the name "Uchi" refers to a private home in Japanese, you will always be treated as a member of our family, not as a tourist or a hotel guest. The location of our house is perfect for sightseeing, 2 min walk to the Zuiganji temple, 7 min walk from the Station.
We stayed for two nights in Eijus wonderful guesthouse. It is located in a small lane beside the main road and you can walk to every important sight. The best thing about this guesthouse is the host Eiju. He is very friendly and you can chat and chat and chat.

We stayed here for 2 nights in mid Oct. There were 7 of us. 3 in one room and 4 in another. My husband and I shared a room with another couple as they run out of couple rooms. Surprisingly it was fully booked. It was our first stay at a backpacker. Overall, I find that the rooms are decent and comfortable. It comes with simple toast/eggs breakfast and curry rice dinner included in the room rates. The toilet facilities is simple and their wifi works fine. The other guests were also pretty friendly and the host was helpful and entertaining. Every evening, we walked about 5-8 mins to the hotel next door for the Onsen. I think they charged JPY500 per pax/per entry. Do remember to bring your own towels there as they do not provide any. The surrounding areas was quiet and nice. On the 2nd day, we took the local bus up the mountains to trek and took a ferry down the lake. The scenery was breathtaking. The ferry station was about 10 mins walk from the backpackers place. Overall, I managed my own expectations and enjoyed my stay there!

I spent 24 days traveling around japan with a friend, visiting a new city every 2 days. Before we hit Tokyo and prepared to fly home, we made a last minute decision to visit Yamagata and stay here. The entire trip was great, but as the title says, just staying here was my best memory about it. I don't have any descriptions to accurately portray the experience, just a warm thanks to the owner and other guest.

When you travel 4 kilometres East from Sendai, the city of trees, you arrive at a quiet shopping street in Nigatake. Escape even deeper into the peaceful residential area off the main road and you come to Guesthouse Umebachi. Umebachi is a small guesthouse that opened in August 1 2011 after 3 years of preparation. Guesthouse , a low cost, homely accommodation option. With prices from 2700yen, Umebachi is no exception. From sightseeing, to business, to sporting events, overnight and long term, let Guesthouse Umebachi be your home away from home. Without abundant opportunities to meet new people, Guesthouse Umebachi has a different charm to Ryokans or hotels. During the night, the reception turns into a bar, with the nightly dinner offering you the best of local ingredients. Including Miyagi's home grown sake, we offer a range of delicious alcohols. Guesthouse Umebachi has a organic feel, made with a focus on natural materials, including clay walls made in the traditional Japanese way. The walls plastered by children from a free school in any way they liked under the plastering guidance of a craftsman. The ceiling and floors made from a breathable hardwood, and keeping only the natural colour of the wood to keep the air clean. Guesthouse Umebachi, surrounded by breathing wood and natural walls, fondering an environment for new relationships to take root and thrive. A real breath of fresh air. Come, be yourself, and spend some time here away from the hustle and bustle of the life.
This place is definitely worth going to if you want to experience a traditional japanese style dinner with a group of people who are all interested in talking and learning about your culture, whilst enjoying several great dishes! This vibe embodies the whole guesthouse, and you'll rarely find a dull moment. The rooms are nice and clean, and there's nothing to really complain about.

Friendly owner that runs this self help place is always happy to advise you on getting around the place. If you are prepared to pick up after yourself, help keep the place clean and don’t mind very basic accommodations that are not too far from attractions. This location can be ok for one or 2 nights. If you are planning on walking the Oirase Stream, fr the hostel its a 10 walk to the lake, bus or ferry across and you are ready to do the trek. Do note that you MUST catch the last bus from JR Hachinohe to this location by 1:20 pm (yes the last bus is very early in the day!). If you miss this, it’s a 20,000 Yen taxi ride getting to the Hostel!!

I stayed with Wik, Minori, and Aruna for one month and was immediately welcomed by their generosity and hospitality. During my stay Wik and Minori introduced me to the world of permaculture that Dana Village actively practices (a spiral herb garden and grey water system to name a few!). There are plenty of workshops focused on meditation, nature, and farming and I enjoyed learning something new each day. Minori and Wik are phenomenal cooks and sharing meals together was such an enjoyable and memorable part of my experience. Dana Village is nestled among towering trees which offer a sense of peace and quietude and it is a short walk or bike ride to several temples. I will always remember my stay at Dana Village and encourage everyone from all backgrounds to visit!
