Dirk Hartog Island National Park, in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area, has immense historical significance and offers great fishing, steep cliffs and secluded beaches. Visitors can bring their own 4WD vehicles or boats to the island to Explore & Discover this hidden treasure.
Where do I start? We all had such a great time camping on the island! Had heaps of fun driving on some sand dunes, exploring around the island, discovering hidden tracks, secluded beaches, awesome fishing and the list goes on! I love the western part of the island.. it’s more rugged and is so remote with ocean views that are so spectacular. It should be on everyone’s bucket list..journey to get to this island is such a hike but it is so very worth it!

There are three groups of islands. I spent my holidays on Post Office Island in the Pelsaert Group. It was rock lobster fishing, now pearls.

The Mackerel Islands are surrounded by the world's most spectacular amusement park: the Indian Ocean. 22 kilometres off the coast of Onslow, Western Australia, the waters here are teeming with a carnival of marine life. A mask and snorkel gives kids unlimited entry to admire the action. For a front row seat, try diving through the riotous colour of the coral gardens. Prefer games of skill? Test your strength above water as you try and haul in a Red Emperor or Spanish Mackerel. We're in the Pilbara's fishiest waters so no one goes home empty handed. On land, the show continues with turtle hatchings and amazing wildlife. The landscape offers a classical north-western Australian experience, abound with vegetation typical of the region. The calm, relaxed nature of the islands provides an ideal escape for singles, couples, families and groups. One has only to step foot onto the islands to experience simultaneous disconnect and reconnect - disconnect from life's bustle and reconnect with those who matter the most.

Marvel at the dramatic rocky headlands, sheltered bays and tall eucalyptus woodlands on Woody Island Nature Reserve- only a 40-minute ferry ride from Esperance. Rich in history, Woody Island is one of 105 islands in the Recherche Archipelago (commonly known as the Bay of Isles) and is the only island open to visitors for day trips and camping. Learn about the Island’s history and get close to nature during the guided hike Island Top bushwalk • Snorkel in the crystal clear waters of Shearwater Bay and colourful marine life (snorkeling gear for rent) • Exploring the nature trails & boardwalks taking in spectacular views of the island • Fishing from the main jetty is also popular – keep an eye out for playful dolphins and inquisitive sea lions! With a wealth of things to see and do, a trip to Woody Island is a must when visiting Esperance.
Woody Island simply gets better! I have been coming here annually for at least 12 years, but the last two visits have excelled. New canvas tents, with comfortable double beds, a hard and soft pillow, crisp white sheets. All set under trees with ocean views. The island is a 240ha nature reserve with stunning walk trails having views of the coastline and islands in the archipelago. Wildlife includes numerous bird species, quails, skinks, kangaroos....but no snakes. The visitors Center has stunning ocean views, a bar and a small but tasty menu. If you want a totally relaxing holiday, this takes some beating.
