Not all it's cracked up to be

We visited with both our mums for a jubilee treat. Firstly the room that we thought most accessible was unbelievably hot. Blinds to a passageway so it felt very exposed and no opening window, plus if you did open the blinds there was a skip directly outside, the only other option had no window at all. We felt obliged to take that room and let our mums have rooms with opening windows. Luckily we were asked by a second member of staff if everything was ok and offered a fan which made it bearable. These rooms are expensive at £100 a night and there is no breakfast facilities at all. Dinner was ok but very expensive and ridiculously huge portion of sea bass that I could only eat half of. I would have been happier at 1/2 portion, 3/4 of the price. If you are paying over £20 for a main you might expect a wine list, not just we have a Sauvignon blanc, a Pinot Grigio and a Chardonnay. Pinot was a bit rubbish. There seems very little going on in Wooler, let's hope we can get breakfast somewhere this morning.

Originally built in the 17th Century by the Earl of Tankerville, it has a long history of providing comfort and warmth to travellers wishing to explore the beauty of the Northumbrian countryside. To this day, the hotel has retained this traditional spirit of hospitality and has garnered a fantastic reputation for its friendly and helpful service. Central to this is the cultivation of a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere supported by some wonderful views, lovely gardens and a sense of charm and style that effortlessly evokes the captivating allure of its vibrant past. Every room also features complimentary Wi-Fi access, freeview TV, hairdryer, direct-dial telephone and tea and coffee making facilities as well as some fantastic views of the gardens and the surrounding countryside. There are room types to suit all kinds of traveller, including single, classic and superior double or twin options. What's more there is also a separate 2-bedroom Garden House in the grounds.

Tired,Sad and Disorganised

Reviewed By E3929WQkevinj

This is a shabby and sad venue in need of refurbishment and a refreshed decor. In our room we failed to get our window to close and using the toilet need flexibility as it was so cramped.....The menu needs updating coupled with the ability to cook and serve food. Yes, you can “bugger up” fish and chips. My wife’s meal was largely inedible. We had lunch meals elsewhere. Breakfast, we are omnivores but friends who are vegetarian their meals were subject to delay, a shortage of veggie sausages and invariably an incorrect order at both breakfast servings. The concept of vegetarian food seemed not to be understood. The venue was understaffed and we were told that there was only one person in the kitchen. The hotel knew a large group we’re staying for a wedding - elsewhere, happily. This is not a cheap venue and compared to many other hotels we have stayed in around the region, it falls down on the provision of basic service and food quality. Room information sheets, and basic equipment, a hair dryer, would be useful additions. The Tankerville Arms Hotel reflects poorly on the Northumbria hospitality sector and the exciting developments happening in Wooler.

Super stay

We stayed here for a night while walking the St Cuthbert's Way. Everything was perfect - location, welcome, room, breakfast, view of garden birds. It's always a shame to be staying only one night when you find a place like this, but we were on a mission to complete the walk, which we did the following day - all the way to Lindisfarne across the sand bar.

Riverside Leisure Park

Set in the heart of the stunning Northumberland countryside, on the edge of the Wooler Water, Riverside Leisure Park offers something very special indeed. Riverside combines a wonderful woodland setting with an abundance of wildlife and superb facilities to create a truly unique holiday location. With close proximity to some of the region’s most popular sights, walking routes and historic attractions and Northumberland’s amazing white sandy beaches just a short drive away, when it comes to location, it simply doesn’t get any better than this.

Professional Team at Riverside

We had been planning on buying a holiday home for many years and had spent a long time researching many sites in many areas. On arrival in Northumberland and at Riverside we knew we had found the ideal site and location for us. The site is large but well spread out with all the facilities you could need on site. The river running through the site, the large fishing lake and quiet areas created throughout the park make it the best of all worlds. The delightful village of Wooler being a few minutes walk from the park was the icing on the cake. We still had to find the right location and caravan on site and we’re shown around the site and the perfect van on the river by Aaron. Aaron made the process a joy and is a credit to Verdant Leisure. Not only did he make the whole buying process easy and straightforward but has followed up a few times post purchase to check that everything is ok and we are settling in ok. Once the sale is agreed Leah took over the administration side and was again a delight to deal with. There is no high pressure sell here, just a professional team that help make dreams come true! We would highly recommend Riverside if you are considering buying a holiday home in Northumberland. We’ll done Verdant for creating such a professional and friendly team!

East Horton Farmhouse

Walkers and vegetarians not welcome

Reviewed By mozza567

Situated directly on St Cuthbert's Way in an idyllic hamlet, this farmhouse should represent a perfect stopping off point for weary walkers. This really isn't the case, and I would urge walkers to find somewhere nearer to Wooler to break the journey along the route. There is no where to eat nearby and getting a taxi can be problematic during the high holiday season. Our driver was most obliging but we had booked our taxi well in advance. The expense of a taxi does add on to your evening out. The checking-in process we experienced was very stressful and not what we needed to go through after a long, hot day's walking. Immediately upon arrival our host Peter launched straight into our order for breakfast the next day. It would have been so much easier if he had let us fill in our breakfast requests in our time once we had relaxed in our room. Our host recorded our requests inaccurately, resulting in an extremely embarrassing scene the next morning at breakfast reminiscent of Fawlty Towers. Rather than pursue the point, we made do with a meager breakfast, which missed many of the items, although what we did get was tasty. We made our way out as soon a possible. Never have we been so keen to leave overnight accommodation. We found both the hosts Peter and Sheila to be unfriendly and unwelcoming. Peter was keen to point out the inconsistency in wearing leather walking boots for our son who is vegetarian. We thought this was an odd and rude way to respond to a paying guest. The house is beautiful, with stunning views, but we would rather have stayed somewhere a lot less formal and set off on our day's walk in good spirits.

Bridgend Farm

Bridgend Farm is beautifully appointed historic, stone farmhouse originally built in 17th century with later Georgian additions. We have very well appointed rooms here and most of our rooms have 37" HD SAT TVs and comfortable super king and king size sleigh beds and also doubles with memory foam mattress.

Wonderful property

Reviewed By SCUdside

Just returned from a week a Bridgend Farm Cottage. A well equipped house for a family get together, beautiful garden. However, nestled between a very busy noisy road, a holiday club bar/restaurant an ice-cream bar and building construction site. So noise well into the small hours and very early next morning. All out of owners hands. We did have some access issues as milk bar customers at times stood around the gate to the property. However an excellent location to explore Northumberland, lots to see and do, more than you can fit into a week.

Stayed for 1 night before a week in Morpeth. Bed very comfy had a good nights sleep. I was surprised how quiet it was even though it is so close to the road and the Italian restaurant. Excellent accommodation for the price. I definitely want to visit again and look forward to the whiskey distillery opening close by.

Hemmel Bed and Breakfast

So peaceful

Reviewed By copsago

Stayed 4 nights at this beautiful B&B on our first trip to Northumberland. Lovely place to stay with lots of extra touches that you don't get in big hotels. We found it easily with satnav and also thought it was a great place to stay to see the sites we'd promised ourselves to visit. We stayed in Room 1 which is large and roomy with plenty of storage space, big bathroom with shower and bath, the rooms are on the ground floor so easily accessible (not for wheelchairs though) and very convenient for the lovely breakfast room and lounge. Breakfast was brilliant with lots of choice and cooked quickly and served with a big smile from Liz and Jonathan. They are the perfect hosts and only wish we could give 10 stars! Would have no hesitation in recommending The Hemmel, hope to return sometime x

Beautifully renovated house

Reviewed By Cristina G

We very much enjoyed our stay with Gavin in Wooler. The house is renovated with a lot of style and tastefully furnished. Rooms are spacious with modern bathrooms. We could wish what we like for breakfast and it was freshly prepared on the spot. Gavin knows the surroundings like his back pocket, so ask him for advice what to see and do around the area.
