Situated deep inside Shimanto Town, Hotel Matsubakawa Onsen is an onsen hotel that is located in the mountains in Shimanto Town, Kochi Prefecture. It is surrounded by the beautiful forest, as well as the Hinoji River, which is a branch of the Shimanto River. The source of our onsen comes from two different springs with different water qualities, and our guests can enjoy spring water of different qualities at the same time. The water in the big public bath contains more alkaline components and feels thicker, and is effective against chronic skin disease, chronic female diseases, and cuts. The open air bath, on the other hand, contains more hydrogen carbonate ions, and is effective against fatigue and colds after the bath. Our dishes are made using the local specialties of Kochi Prefecture as well as other ingredients we can procure from the mountains, rivers, and the sea in Shimanto Town, and all the ingredients are carefully examined by our head chef.
We spent two nights at this nice quiet onsen next to Shimanto river. The outdoor onsen overlooking the wilderness and river is unforgettable. Delicious food, warm service by Saya who picked us at the Kubokawa station and saw u off too! (Thank you Saya !) It was rainy during our stay at the 3rd week of December but with umbrellas, we went for walks on both days and enjoyed ourselves.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed staying at the Marche Yusuhara Hotel. It helps that I am an architect and the building is designed by Kengo Kuma, but aside from that, the hospitality of the staff was wonderful and warm. The Japanese breakfast is incredible. The hotel sits right in the middle of the small town and is surrounded by beautiful mountains. There is a great Onsen 5 minutes down the road. I will return to this place to stay for a longer time on my next trip.

"Kumo no Ue" means "on the clouds" and that's very much like what staying there felt like. A beautiful boutique hotel in the mountains of Kochi - felt like the place famous writers go to get away from it all and work. Most of all enjoyed their hot springs - even the walk to it from the hotel room was incredible! A little out-of-the-way, but worth it if that's what you're looking for.

Kamikoya represents a unique experience in terms of hospitality, location, accommodation and learning the art of traditional, chemical-free Japanese paper-making. Rogier shared his immense experience open heartedly, creating an interesting and fun environment for the washi-papermaking workshop. The accommodation has been purpose built overlooking a beautiful rice growing valley surrounded by cedar and bamboo. Chika is the most amazing cook, making a wonderful selection of regional dishes from the freshest of ingredients. Our time at Kamikoya was unforgettable.

We stumbled upon Guesthouse En as we were looking for a place to stay between two days of exploring Niyadogawa and the gorges, and booked it because it's quite central to the places we were visiting, and the review score was excellent. After our stay, we wholeheartedly agree with those reviews. Guesthouse En is literally in the mountains. After branching off from the main road, it took us 20 minutes driving on a single-lane winding road to reach it. We were welcomed by Takao and Megu. Even though they speak little English and our Japanese is quite limited, we didn't encounter any problem at check-in. Takao gave us a thorough tour around the property and made sure we were aware of the house rules (very reasonable as long as you recognize you are staying in a home-stay and not a hotel), and off to prepare our barbecue dinner for us. The first floor of the house is the common area and consists several Japanese style dining tables and a well-stocked kitchen. The toilets, sinks and shower facility are outside of the house, as well as a laundry area. The second floor consists three Japanese style bedrooms (futons instead of beds), and all with view of the mountains. Every single place was clean and well-maintained. We were provided with more than enough ingredients for the barbecue as well as the equipment. It was quite an experience to enjoy a grill under a starry sky. The kitchen was stocked with breakfast items, and the drinks were very reasonably priced. Thanks to Takao and Megu's hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Guesthouse En.
