Privately owned for many years by Michael & Diane Matthews, the hotel offers a great choice of dining all with a focus on fresh local produce. The Royalist is ideal for a special occasion with an a la carte menu together with a superb wine list. Chambers brasserie is renowned for its traditional British menu. Camellias Tea Rooms offers an extensive menu selection including traditional afternoon tea. A charming place to relax to the sound of a grand piano. Car parking is charged @ £10 per night.
We arrived on Saturday afternoon and greeted by Tamsin, who I had been communicating with for a few weeks to arrange a 90th birthday celebration dinner for my mum. I can not fault anything. Communication was quick, everything went to plan, and there were no hiccups! Special mention to Charlotte, Tamsin, Mark and Janice. The staff were wonderful and accommodated every request. The food was fantastic, both dinner and breakfast! To have Pre dinner bubbles in the Courtyard was an added bonus. Thank you, to all of you and I think we also met Mr Matthews too! I would highly recommend this hotel and would not hesitate to stay again.

Angela is a life saver. I was in desperate need of an espresso due to a 12 hour stint with my one year old, even though it wasn’t within the hotels remit (we were attending a catered family wedding), she brewed me one, no questions asked, and it was to perfection! Delicious. The decor is beautiful, and the gardens are very well maintained. All staff are welcoming and go above and beyond at every opportunity. I will be coming back to stay again.

My Wife and I called for advice on our way to Chester with a important problem and Kim a member of staff went above her tour of duty to sort it for us, not only that she was very kind, pleasant and understanding. We certainly do not find many people of her calibre in this country around today. Brilliant

A unique combination of timeless elegance and contemporary design makes this AA three-star historic inn the perfect destination for an evening out or a longer stay - whether to unwind after a day of busy meetings, or to while away a relaxing weekend in Shropshire's most beautiful county town.
Stayed one night on our way back from Wales. A lovely decorated place with lovely staff however there is no mention of how many stairs you have to go up and down to your room. My friend and I both have knee issues and found the 60+ stairs up and down to our room was difficult and painful.

Warm welcome after a hectic day of house packing. Spacious room, clean and quiet which was great. Comfortable bed and pillows with the usual tea / coffee. The only negative was the shower water temperature which was only tepid, the shower was however big and clean. Decent choice of breakfast and the option to take a bacon bap and a coffee away. Very good value and certainly would stay again.

Last min booking, as we decided to stay in Shrewsbury another night. My partner found this place, dog friendly and with breakfast. OMG!!!! Could not fault one thing. The staff went above and beyond to provide. Nothing was any trouble, mad a fuss of my dog, even got treats. Oh how I wish I’d found this hotel when I first booked to stay in Shrewsbury. Evening in the room was just high end perfection. Even the tea and coffee facilities were of top quality. And then, the breakfast. As we had a dog we were sat outside, which was no problem. And the selection is excellent. I would go back, and I would stay there over and over.

From day one during our four night stay we found deficiencies in the quality of service provided that was not of the quality expected from a four star hotel. The first morning we reported to the reception a leaking shower and the lack of a bedside reading lamp. These issues were never resolved. Went to the bar on three nights, first night the staff did not know what a white wine spritzer was, she also had no idea how to pull a pint, nearly drowning herself in beer. Had the same drinks on three nights with the price different each night. When the query was made no explanation was forthcoming. Food not bad in the restaurant on each night but quality of service very varied. Very large room and bathroom, strange that cardboard coffee cups are used in the bathroom instead of glasses. Bedroom maintained in goor order but mold visible within shower cubicle. The best that can be said of our stay the wi-fi was very quick compared to what I am used to. I would not recommend this hotel to friends to stay at. Overall I have had far better service from chain budget hotels who have better trained staff in my opinion. The hotel needs to up its game to four star status.

Olde worlde hotel in a great location in Shrewsbury. Parking was easy, accessed through the passage at the front of the hotel, a bargain at £5 for the night. This is a very old hotel so don't expect modern carpets and furnishings but all was clean and well maintained. The guys at reception were very welcoming and polite. The full English breakfast was delicious. The only negative was that the spirits in the bar were very expensive.
